Yea, hard jerkbait and hard big swimbait is almost always you get what you pay for. If you hold a LC pointer and something cheaper like husky jerk /shadow rap/ kvd jerkbait, the difference in material is already apparent.
LC pointer is still cheaper than megabass vision. They don't go on sale much but sometimes you can find good deals on them.

I have a 5wt fly rod and am looking to get something lighter for smaller trout. Is there a big enough difference to justify a 3wt? Would a 2wt be too small for 15" rainbows?

It's just habit I guess, when I see people argue in here what is best pretty much nobody ever uses the actual arguments to use either one, and there is perfectly good reasons to use the two differently. I've just come to the conclusion that for Americans fishing boils down to presenting the bait rapidly to as many fish as possible and hope for a bite rather than finding the fish and tricking it. Might aswell be two different sports if you ask me

Looking for a memecaster setup to fish large mouths in reeds. Any suggestions? I'm considering getting the Abu Garcia Revo X, being able to upgrade the internals is appealing, and pairing it with a St. Croix Mojo Boss.

My other main rods are a medium Fenwick HMG and a light HMX with Pflueger Presidential spinning reels if it matters.

That's a pretty decent setup if you're on a tight budget. You can find the Revo X under $100 when it goes on sale.
Another great budget alternative is the Daiwa Tatula 100, its really great for pitching and flipping in dense vegetation. Daiwa reels are also super upgradeable and the aftermarket parts available are second to none.

Always apply a good coating of the water repellent or whatever fly finisher you use when you are done tying.
And of course you'll have to keep applying it when you're fishing otherwise your flies won't float. I use Loon Lochsa floatant on my flies when out on the water.

Looking at buying some of these newfangled lines instead of mono to do some respooling. I see a lot of people talking about leaders but whats the point? Everyone is saying muh fluro expensive but I can get some jap stuff for like 30 bucks for 250m, enough to spool a reel no problem.

Sunline Sniper FC is reasonably priced when its on sale. I usually stock up when that happens.
If you want to use braid, just use an 8 strand braid that's fused like Fireline Ultra 8 Carrier (I like it in Crystal) and tie a fluorocarbon leader. Its way better than mono.

not totally sure myself, been wondering. I've read comments about fish being able to see braided better in water and it turning them off of bait, which is understandable, but is there a point beyond that? do you use a leader for anything other than braid?

if you're using tough braid and you get hung up, you'll have to cut off that whole length of braid if you can't come lose, a weaker leader will break off at the union or bait and save you your expensive braided line

casting rods are made to be used with baitcasters. spinning rods designed to be used with spinning reels.
Some of them are multipiece, some of them telescoping, some of them one piece.
If you're getting started just get an uglystick combo from walmart with a spinning reel.

Need help from some of you JDM nerds out there, specifically with the Daiwa rod line up.

My local shop has some of the newer Kage rods with the SVF blank, along with the Tatula elite signature rods with the same SVF blank (split grip, EVA grips, silver/gray color).
HOWEVER, there is the Cronos line and the new Rebellion line that are HVF (supposedly a grade down from the SVF), but with nicer hardware and some sort of carbon wrap on the blank. The Cronos has a Fuji SiC guide on just the tip (with alconite for the rest), while the Rebellion instead has a carbon fiber reel seat but no SiC guides.

It comes down to a supposedly better blank with cheaper hardware, vs a supposedly worse blank (with extra tech) but better hardware. Any input is much appreciated.

After about an entire American ton of fish, several including 4-5lb large and smallmouth, 30"+ pike, catching 3 28-30" steelhead in thick current on a big river killed my Abu orra. Looking to see what's good out there.

There is value in that you're spending less per rod. The biggest reason is customization though. You can build the rod to specific types of fishing or even to specific lures. If I want a rod that feels a certain way with a crankbait or spinbait you can choose different blanks, guides, grips to suite that need, then build a series of them for yourself that look alike for different situations. One for flipping weeds, one for throwing poppers, etc.
I'm just starting and currently working on my first build. If it's not total shit I'll post pics when I'm done.

I exclusively use Shimano reels, I have a Stella 2500HGS, Exsence C3000MHG, and Stradic Ci4+'s, one 1000HG and the other 2500HG. The Ci4+'s are good enough, no need to go any higher honestly. Only reason I use the first two is because I got them both for $350 each, brand new. Absolute steal, couldn't pass it up. Caught the first smallie I posted on the Stella + Loomis CNQ 842s combo.

This is all tough to judge based on the user intention. Not many people need seals for fresh water, so the tiers would be much lower. Low end being more like Pflueger President or Daiwa Exceler Lt. Then on the higher end, Tatula Lt and whatever else is more fw minded.

You can also get the tsunami shield but that is only for really abusing and dunking your reel in saltwater. Completely shield reel like the tsunami shield has more grindy feel to it

I'm also landlocked but I like my sealed reels for better protection. A quick rinse off after a hard day of fishing keeps everything clean and increases its longevity.

The Nasci and BG aren't saltwater specific reels. They can be used in both freshwater and saltwater because they have better seals and corrosion resistant coatings.
You still have to clean them out and do maintenance from time to time, probably not as often as a reel that has no sealing or corrosion resistance.
If you fish the great lakes like Lake Ontario the water in some areas can be brackish with all the salt runoff and pollution.

They're both good companies that put out good rods and reels. I like Daiwa because that's what I started with and I hate how Shimano's look. Their lower priced gear for the most part is really quite good for the price range. The Daiwa BG is an absolutely excellent $100 freshwater reel; unassuming, built like a tank and with beefy drag for it's size ranges.

The cheapest I'd go on a Shimano is a Stradic Ci4+. If they build their reels anything like they do their bicycle components, I have absolutely no faith in their lower end gear.

To preface, I am a budget fisherman. I try to find the best I can for a moderate budget. I just can't sink $400 on a reel and feel like I made a good purchase.
Currently I have a Penn Spinfisher V 4500 for salt water and muskey. I've had it for a few years on the surf. It is still my smoothest reel by far. It holds up well to all kinds of conditions, just spray it with fresh water when you're done.
A Mitchel 308x with two spools (it comes with an extra factory graphite spool) so I have one spooled with 30lb brad, the other with 6lb mono. I've had this reel since the early 2000's and it has yet to fail me in any way. Pure workhorse.
Finally a Pfleuger Presidential 2500 that I just got this year, so no info on longevity yet. It has so far been a great trout reel, I've probably pulled in 40-50 trout and a mess of panfish this year.

I want to setup a new boat pole for fluking. I have -always- used Newell reels for saltwater fishing (other than surfcast obviously) to the point that I don't even know what else is out there. Are there any good mid range options? Or should I buy another Newell p338 and add to the collection?

What is the difference between the Daiwa DSK25-B/F662M and DSK20-B/F602ML?
I am looking at their website and the only thing I see between them on the spec sheet is one is 6' and the other is 6' 6". Does the length make any noticeable difference, probably use it in the kayak mostly.

Maybe, although i've never heard of needing to upsize a reel to deal with heavy vegetation. Upgrade to a baitcaster/heavy rod and 50+ lb test braid that cuts through, sure, but you're never gonna be seeing a bass make 70+ yard runs especially with something like a frogging rig. My understanding of larger reel sizes is you get more line capacity and heavier rated drag for playing those larger fish. If you're fishing heavy vegetation, you're gonna have your drag tightened way the heck down anyways. Largemouth/Spotted bass are some of the weakest fighting freshwater fish.

Shorter poles are useful for shore fishing when you have to navigate casts around trees and other shore vegetation. It's also worth considering grip length for use in a kayak. Normal length handles always end up smacking me in the chest/stomach and messing up my casts.

Picked up a TFO traveler spinning rod, 6-12. Mainly doing inshore salt around Tampa. What reels do you guys run around $150 or less? I have a Penn conflict 2 on my other rod and that works well enough but I'd like to know what else is out there. I'm a fly guy normally so spin is out of my element.

Cheaper in scale, most of the flies I use average about $4 a piece with some specialty patterns coming in higher. You also have the ability to make flies to suit your environment better or chase after fish in a certain place depending on time of day, etc. Tarpon flies can vary from a piece of foam shaped like a worm to a big fuckers so tying your own gives you infinite options.

Nitpick: a rod is not a "pole." Fishing poles are used two-handed and without a reel: they have no guides, and the line is tied to the end of the pole. They are more commonly seen in Europe than America now.

Also, there are two schools of thought about rod length for shore/bank fishing. People use the tranx for yellowtail and smaller tuna so you should be fine. It is built to withstand saltwater fishes. Of course, like all level winder, you should replace the levelwind pawl once in a while bit that’s as easy as changing out a ball bearing. I just though that a level winder with self engage reel and thumb bar would be more comfy for bottom jigging like fluke fishing. If you want a non level wind then maybe you can look into avet sx, ocea jigger, torium 14, daiwa sealine/saltist.

Exactly. My dad had a cheap 30 dollar shimano combo he got at Walmart while on a business trip on the coast, so he didn't want it so I let my girlfriend use it. The reel was Awful and the rod broke after a couple weeks. Even for cheap shit it sucked. My only truly expensive reel is a diawa lexa hd, and I love it, but it's comparing apples and oranges to my other reels in the 70-80 dollar range.

I have a daiwa exist 4000 I used for spinning, bombarda fishing and yeeting swimbaits at pike with various 6-11ft rods. It's ever so slightly too large for some of the lightest of my fishing but I can't afford mutiple of these. It's a really good fucking reel tho

IDK, I've been taken out on a couple of Salmon charters by a buddy who is good friends with the charter owner. He just uses spoons most of the time, he will throw cranks out ocassionally if the fish are biting it doesn't really seem to matter too much he said. Salmon are very voracious and don't live long enough generally to get smart about lures.

The drag clicker sounds dull and not as crisp as other much cheaper reels. Since the drag sound matters to me I'd rather spend the money on a Shimano Stella. I also prefer the design of the Stella over the Exist.
Don't get me wrong, the Exist is an excellent reel and I love Daiwa reels (I own a Steez CT SV) but its just not for me.

The all black Exsence looks cheap to me compared to the Stella. It looks kinda similar to Abu Garcia spinning reels like the Roxani. I agree that it is cheaper than the Stella and the internals are mostly the same so its good value for money if the looks appeal to you.

So at the moment. trout of the rainbow verity are really active. But there is walleye bass and panfish here. I’ve been casting in all directions even hunting in one location. Let the grub sink weather it’s trying tip water or letting it sink ~5 seconds since it’s 1-10 feet deep off the banks. Retrieval slow with some stops for It to sink. Sometime only slow, fast, twitches.

Panther martin spinners with gold body/spoon are like crack for rainbow trout. Brookies love the red bullet body with golden spoon. Pretty much all trout I've caught other than fly fishing have been with either salmon eggs or panther martins.

10lb braid and 4lb fluoro leader is a good setup for trout. Make sure to use quality fluoro like Sunline or Seaguar.
Tie your leader to your braid using an FG knot or improved alberto knot, search it up on YouTube if you need to.
If it doesn't end up working for you for some reason at least you'll have the 4lb fluoro to use as your mainline. But I've never had issues with braid+fluoro leader on my UL spinning and BFS setups.

If you can, use an 8 strand braid like Fireline Ultra 8 in crystal, PowerPro Super Slick 8 V2, or Daiwa J-Braid Grand.
Much easier to tie stronger knots with 8 strand braid when its that thin.

Nearest there are three Walmart’s within 10 miles from the house.

The main place I go is Boyd Lake in Loveland... large body of water that was just stocked with thousands of rainbow weeks ago. I hear there are monsters here. 22” rainbow and bass the size of a football.

There is also a running river called cache le poudre river which flows from high in the Rockies down through the town. Fairly shallow ~1-4ft. deep through town. Rainbow and Brown can be found in here. ( I have only received fish strikes but nothing hooked ) a guy across the water said he fought a brown on a panther martin.

There is also Horsetooth resi which is 6.5 mi. Long and 10 miles of shore.
Filled with bass, walleye, trout and panfish.

This is just the local. There are lots of fishable areas in 10 mile. These are the three I have been to.

If you're absolutely positive that you've gotten strikes from fish then maybe you just need to keep trying different techniques on retrieve and hook setting. It took me quite a while to figure things out as well. If one area is unproductive after 10 or 15 minutes I'd keep moving.
I'd say give it a few more shots on different days and weather conditions. Trout can be finicky like that and the weather looks cold from your photos. Sometimes if the water is too cold the fish will retreat to deeper waters and the bite will shut down.
Best of luck to you, I wish I had access to such amazing fishing opportunities as you do but I'm stuck here in Canada and the situation is getting worse by the day.

Being the only fisherman shore banging an entire lake is probably one of the most peaceful things I've ever done. Had a ranger come up to me and go "WHAT THE FUUUUUUCK ARE YOU DOING, DID YOU NOT SEE THE CLOSED OFF ROAD" told him I'm the only person fishing out here, by myself, and I just got through a bad breakup with my 10 year girlfriend (bullshit). Guy felt sympathetic with and told me as long as I'm by myself, maybe 1 or 2 friends fishing with me, he doesn't have a problem. Called his supervisor and he even said it was fine since I was alone.

Over here in Canada we just get issued hefty fines. I simply can't afford to pay the $800+ fine if I'm caught. I know people that have been fined for fishing in a park that's closed.
Our trout opener is tomorrow (April 25th). The province of Ontario keeps saying that fishing remains open and to practice social distancing (which is perfectly reasonable to me) but all the boat launches are closed, parks/conservation areas are closed, and parking lots are closed. Some rivers and trails have banned all activity and there's no camping on crown land.
So basically we can still fish but we'll get fined heavily if we attempt to fish. I guess the statement was only for those that are wealthy enough to own private property with direct access to a body of water. I wish the government would be more honest about the situation.

With the billions of dollars the Canadian government is giving out, I suppose they'll have to recoup the money somehow.
The Ganaraska River in Port Hope is officially closed (walk-throughs aren't even allowed now) for trout opener on Saturday and I'm sure officers will be there ready to dish out hefty fines as fast as they can.
Parking on the side of the road at Forks of the Credit is also banned and lots of tickets and towing will be done on Saturday without a doubt. Saying that fishing is open but then putting in all these restrictions and fines is an easy revenue stream for the government.

I own the best of both UL spinning and UL baitcasting. I do not quantify my experience by talking $$ other than occasionally explaining someone’s bad purchase decision. No one starts with Stellas and Calcuttas, but they are worth it and anyone that owns and uses them frequently will agree.

Now I’ll explain UL baitcasting vs spinning

BFS reels and shallow spooled spinning reels are the premium UL reels. A shallow spooked spinning reel with cast a little bit farther than a BFS reel, but not by much.

Now why is that? Advancement in Fishing line. PE braid UL braid is so thin now, they have stuff that is 1/4 the diameter of 1lb mono. The stuff flies off a reel like silk.

However, BFS UL baitcasting is infinitely more accurate. On a stream or creek, this is the deal breaker.

I use my long UL spinning set ups (7’6+) for Stillwater and larger rivers.

Also, My initial inquiry into BFS was not so I could cast more, but so I could present a sinking minnow with extreme accuracy. But I do understand your observation; I believe that’s one reason why XG reels are a thing now.

It's not even ultralight specific it's just the very way the different reels work. If I'd have to chose one area where a baitcaster is more accurate I'd have to say very short distances, in which case I'd probably just dip with my 11ft rod

The reason why baitcasters are more accurate (at any distance) is that you can stop the spool anytime and that a cast requires force to load the rod and move the lure.

Spinning reels, when ready to cast with the bail open, require no load of a rod to move a lure if you are not holding the line, gravity does the work for you. This is precisely why spinning set ups are not as accurate. Once the line is let go, you’re going to have to close the bail to stop the line; there are no brakes to slow down a cast with too much heat behind it.

Now having explained it, a spinning rod requires more premeditation before an accurate cast and a BC setup gives you more control options.Keep in mind, I’m not saying you can’t be accurate with a spinning setup (because you can)

That is just straight up abuse of your reel and I highly suggest you do not ever do this unless you want to break it. Put a finger on the spool to stop it.

BC gives you no control option because it's a fixed spool, you can clamp it or slow it down with your finger exactly like you can on a spinning reel. Maybe a baitcaster is more accurate for people who don't bother to learn proper casting technique but I wouldn't call that a good thing. Also spinning reels cast great because the spool is not hindered in the cast, line comes off in loops, on BC your lure has to drag line off the spool, low lure weight fucks with your casting distance even on UL and a spinning reel will beat any UL BC on any distance if fished properly

na you can get good bfs performance with reels under 100 bucks and use light rods from walmart for 30 bucks. BFS 1500 gear might get you a couple extra feet but if you're river fishing its not a big deal. If I had the money I'd totally buy all the best bfs gear so I don't blame them though.

Being fixed spool has nothing to do with control. Thumbing the spool will always better on baitcaster than on spinning reel. When you are thumbing a baitcaster, you are slowing down the spool speed you get a much more consistent result and smooth slowing stalling of the cast. For spinning reel, you are trying to slow down lines coming off the spool which is more inconsistent, especially the the line is coming off the spool perpendicularly.
Fishing the water column always feel better with a baitcaster than a spinning reel.

if you accurately cast and not over throw it every time there is no need to feather a spool.
I don't have to add extra force because my reel was designed to allow line flow off the spool. I give a cast an appropriate amount of force and it lands where I want it every time.
