Reminds me, we used to have our small garden full of buxus bushes, these plants grew relatively fast, had strong branches and you could trim them in all kinds of shapes, I was doing quite a bit of experimenting with them but unfortunately, recently a specific moth has eaten them all, these moths have eaten them to the point where the plant dies so we were forced to dig them all out. We preserved one, one with a really thick base, we trimmed all the leaves, places which could house potential moth eggs and built a fine cage around it to prevent other moths from reaching it. It's been growing well despite it being leafless for a few weeks.
Thing is, the buxus was once so common in every single garden, they were cheap and very versatile and could take a beating but now, they have pretty much disappeared in all but a few years time because of one hungry caterpillar with a very specific diet.
it saddens me, we had to throw out plants that we've been taking care of for more than 25 years and nothing could be done about it.
