I don't lurk as often as I once did and I plan on going out hiking for the first time in 5 years in one of Texas' NFs. Do y'all have any recommended gear (footwear, utilities, tents, etc) and advice?

Well I plan on getting back out there more often.
Plus I'll be moving (or hoping to be) to Montana, Wyoming, or somewhere around there so I might wanna try to camp as well, haven't camped since boy scouts (most places where I live is mostly private land).

i'm partial to a gas range and oven over electric, personally, because they heat up faster, but that's going to be dependent on either having gaslines to your house, or getting a propane tank installed.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread even is. You can ask everyone who posts on here to post their gear lists, but a lot of people don't keep track and a lot more don't own any gear because they don't actually go outside, or if they do, they've fooled themselves into thinking that their competence level is anywhere close to being worth listening to.

Pick the stuff you think you need and go out. After your back make a list of the things you didnt use and the things you wanted. Use that to pack for the next trip and so on.

LOTS of yuppies and boomers are retiring out in MT/WY/UT/whatever because "muh views" and "muh recreation" and are causing real estate prices to fucking skyrocket because they're bringing their overinflated techfucker money to a state that has no such capacity for that industry. they're flooding the land and bringing their godless communist laws with them. one of my friends born and raised in bozeman is noticing the massive influx in hipsters in the past decade that are rapidly causing the entire state to turn blue, literally trespassing people's land to take instagram selfies and bitching about how much the people born and raised there hunt deer. it's really bad.

Then again Texas is having the same problem too I think. Californians and immigrants flooding here, turning the state blue, causing real estate and land prices to increase to where some land where I live is 2,000 per acre or more.

If you’re actually thru hiking the lonestar trail set ive thru hiked all those trails twice now. The best setup i had for it was a OR alpine bivy and alice pack, a cheap amazon 20 degree sleeping bag, sawyer water filter screwed on a waterbottle, army canteen cup for cooking bic lighter and a leatherman.

Sam Houston National Forest/Lone Star Trail at this time of year usually just has mosquitoes and a lot of spider webs. In the summer you'll be dealing with even more mosquitoes and spider webs, wet heat, foliage, and ticks. Get some permethrin spray for your clothes to deal with the ticks and as a precaution you can tuck in your pants into your socks. Remember to also grab deet.

I'll keep those in mind.
The spider webs don't bother me however, my grandpa's land where we hunt hogs is always filled with spider webs every 5 steps.

Because of the spider webs, mosquitoes, and the conditions there's usually no one on the trails.

Here's some notable things I can remember: if you want to see some palmettos take the Little Lake Creek Wilderness trail, and
Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area usually has a woodpecker flying around if you wanna see one. I might remember seeing a Pileated Woodpecker on the service roads to that rec area.
