Obviously "adventure" trips and motorcycle camping in general are pretty popular, but has anyone done extended off-road trips? I went on an overnight last weekend on a whim and had to turn a poncho into a windbreak, so any advice on how to stay comfortable without compromising off-road capability would be great.

My advice would also be similar. Distribute your load as evenly as you can. I use my bike for hunting duties and when I have a couple of deer on the back its practically a unicycle

I've carried 50+ lbs on some rough jeep tracks with my bike, but handling is a good bit worse.
I'd say the sweet spot is about 25lbs, in last pic i had a bunch of comfort items like a collapsible chair and big inflatable pad.

Backpacking and bikepacking gear crossover a lot. Nothing quite like turning an 18 mile hike to a pristine lake into a 2 mile hike by taking a rough track up the mtn and hiking off trail.

Are you guys just picking a direction and riding, regardless of who owns it or whether you're 'allowed' to be there? Or are you going to established 4WD routes/parks and camping there?

I actually discovered a crack in my clutch cover (from when I dropped it on my previous trip hundreds of miles ago!) while I was out there; part of the rock hit me half an inch above the case saver. There's a dent in the case saver too, which is probably the reason the oil was still within spec after riding hundreds of miles. In any case, I highly recommend them; just liberally apply your adhesive to help distribute stresses.

I find there's a sweet spot where the roads are so desolate and abandoned that people don't really care anymore. Old abandoned forestry roads are a favorite of mine. If you can find any old topo maps of your area they are likely to be noted on them. Its nice to have permission so your not looking over your shoulder all the time.

I suggest you all go to advrider and read ride reports by "Joe Motocross". Dude packs lighter than anyone I've ever seen before. He just cruises around Utah backcountry drinking whisky and sleeping in the dirt. Kinda corny sometimes in a boomerish way but was a big inspiration to sell my DL650 and get a DR650.

If your in the North island hit the 42nd traverse. Heaps of campsites and side branch trails to explore. Busy in summer time. I usually do a mid winter run through there. Caution; if its snowed recently the snow damage can be a real pain in the ass.

Someone online had recommended a cheap hockey neck guard/bib for spring and fall riding, block some of the wind/rain/hail/snow/etc between jacket and helmet. Wish I knew about that about 8 years ago, because damn, that $12 neck guard made a huge difference in ride comfort through shit weather. Storm collar on the jacket does okay, but it leaks especially at highway speeds.

I need to get a set of cases. Packed relatively light (Toolkit, FAK, radio, PLB, camelbak, camera, gatorade and some snacks) but I'd like to get that 15lbs off my back. May get a small tank bag as well. There's a few things that'll stay on me, but most of it I can consolidate to my jacket and stash the rest in cases.

They're not necessarily terrible, but they're as heavy as a DR650 and make as much power as a WR250R. You're probably better off getting a used DR-Z if you want any sort of acceleration or off-road capability.

I do think they suffered through their choice of BMW 1200s, but they were carrying a shit-ton of gear 6000 miles, much of it off road. A small engine wouldn't have carried the weight and would have gone bang long before the end.

I'm 29 and went camping last year for the first time in my life with my girlfriend. I fucking loved it and was incredibly excited to go camping again this year before COVID-19 happened. I was also in the process of scheduling dirt bike lessons.

This may sound naive but I never really thought about combining the two. I know zero about camping in non-modernized campsites, let alone a dirt bike. Assuming I continue developing skills in camping and I learn how to ride, would it be possible for someone from the Bay Area, California to do something like this?

I grew up in the city and know nothing about camping areas in California, but have always wanted to learn.

Wow, that was surprisingly wholesome. I have more of a backpacking background, but none of my friends ride dirt, so I just took the MSF course for street riding and bought a cheap dual-sport, then found some easy terrain to practice in the dirt. I'm still trying to figure out how to improve my form, but you can definitely just learn by trial and error; the bike is designed to be dropped.
Regular backpacking will give you a better feel for how to camp efficiently, but with some experience in backpacking and some experience in riding, you should be able to at least get started with motorcycle camping. I can't give any advice about the bay area, but I know a lot of people like to ride in California's desert areas, so you should be able to find some land a couple hundred miles east. Don't worry too much about expertise for now; just be safe and have fun!

Buy a cb500x. It's great for literally nothing, meaning good at everything. Easy to work on. And gets 80+mpg for your commute.
Look for sale by owner jobs. They're caught in the objective loss of trade ins that don't consider the cost of farkles. You'll need panniers, a rack, and lever guards. I recommend a gas can mount and bashplate too.

I carry a swag when I go on road trips because I don't like paying for accommodation. You get the freedom of not needing to search for accommodation too, so you can get really lost on back roads without worrying.
Thinking of getting a tent when I finish rebuilding my dirtbike though.

I'm trying to come up with a MYOG design for an UL tarp that connects to the motorcycle similar to that. I like some of the hiking designs for tarps, but many rely on hiking poles. Some tarps/shelters that use your moto do exist but they are for cruiserbros and are heavy. Hammocks are cool but only if you have trees around.

Not in the Alps: they're too populated, too tourist-friendly, too well groomed. Roads are either paved or closed, tracks are reserved for hikers. Truth be told there are some dirt roads in central and southern Italy but they're all modest in length and lots of highway miles away from where I live.

Obviously one could just just roll the dice and hope to cross no cops/forest rangers... but if they do catch you they may even take your bike.

I have unfortunately, and it's a mess: as a rule of thumb it's not allowed but in typical fashion it varies from region to region, province to province, and sometimes municipality to municipality. As far as I know only Emilia and Tuscany explicitly allow riding on dirt roads, barring specific exceptions. In the north east everything is off limits, including river beds and banks, even if it's not explicitly marked as such. I guess one could still ride on the unmarked roads and play dumb if they catch you but it's a risky game.

Nais bike btw, I also have a 650 thumper. Wouldn't mind trading it for a lighter 250 though.

No, every time I've done some off roading I've been relatively far from cities and I doubt I ever crossed private property.
Altough I never really went through very active hiking trails and the like obviously, I think that's the most likely case where you'd find yourself in trouble.
Except in Piedmont, even pedestrian users of the trails seem to tolerate us.

I did 2 weeks on solo motorcycle through Kyrgyzstan and camped out for a bunch of it. Highlights included: Riding up an icy mountain road to Song Kol with 20 snowbanks, riding across the high plateau prairie alongside a herd of horses, wordlessly exchanging cigarettes with a random Kyrgyz shepherd on horseback, trying to get a flat tire fixed when I speak no Kyrgyz and enough Russian to say "I don't understand Russian.", sleeping in a field next to a creek and listening to it bubble all night, sleeping in an old soviet era corral and watching two shepherds move 300-400 sheep from one horizon to the next on horseback with a single dog, random American titties, cheap beer, pulling the back wheel off the bike and getting the tire patched again, going for a swim in Issyk Kol, randomly finding a massive carving of Yuri Gagarin on a mountain road, being the tallest person in the Osh Bazaar.

That is actually my question. I once got stuck on a hill, the exhaust once burnt straight through a pair of work pants and left a second degree on my skin while trying to waddle off the road. But at the same time, the exhaust is chromed out. Only slightly less visible than the yellow paint.
So, I figure draping it over may be difficult, wonder if anyone has experience.

In defense of KTM, they were a relatively small company back then. The KTM 950 adv was brand new at the time and the bugs were not sorted out. I think it may have been their first multi-cylinder bike even. Meanwhile BMW had the GS line going on 20 years. Charlie was experienced yes, but the other two riders were rookies. The publicity was not worth the risk of total failure. Whoever at KTM thought the route was impossible ended up being correct, as the boys had to truck the bikes over the deep rivers in Russia. I still think KTM chose correctly by not giving them bikes. Yes they lost out on a few sales from adv-boomers, but they are doing just fine. The 950 adv ended up being leagues ahead of the GS and is still beloved (and raced) today.

Just take things slowly, don't even think about the front brake, and you should be fine. You'd also do well to try and slide the rear end a few time just to figure out how things behave before you get too into things, it's better to wipe out close to the trailhead.

Learn to ride, learn to control the motorcycle. Most of your braking power comes from the front, it's why there's 2 rotors on the front of big bikes and only one on the back.

It's decent advice for someone going from road riding to dirt, look at the diameter of dirt bike brake rotors, they're small compared to dualsports and even smaller compared to road bikes, on a dirt bike it requires much more effort to lock the front wheel because the brakes actually can't exert much force and you've got good tires for the terrain. The last thing I want the guy to do is head out onto a dirt road with his GS500 with 300+mm brakes and street tires and have the front end tuck the first time he's got to slow down because his natural reaction is to use the front brake, it just happens before you can react if you don't know what to look for.

If you really wan't to get a feel for how much you can apply find a decent dirt or gravel hill and cut the engine while coasting down it, with the engine off you'll be able to hear the front starting to lock up before it actually does, just keep in mind varying surfaces will have more or less of a limit.

Just treat it like your're backpacking, when I go motocamping I've just got everything in a drybag backpack that gets lashed to the top rack on the bike, wearing the backpack is doable but it wears you out way faster offroad.

If you're serious about it, having two smaller side bags is advantageous for weight distribution but you're better off just packing lighter anyways.
