This is pretty ironic, considering that on paper, Yanks were providing best rations to their men, as they were well-packed, contained large amount of meat and had extensive logistics to deliver them. In reality, anything that wasn't A and B rations (so just meals cooked in the field kitchen) was insufficient to keep people going.
