Lot of work. More work to make rain ready. Not very warm. Only blocks win in one direction. Messy and most will leave it and hurt the environment.

They are fun to make if you own some property to keep it on - but they are what you call an emergency shelter. In most military survival manuals there are instructions on building them.

The bare bones type like your picture isn't really warm and cozy, but with a lot of time, the right foliage and deadfall they can be made to stop the wind.

If you build a teepee style wood shelter large enough to accommodate a small campfire, they can be made really comfy if you have a lot of moss around, as moss is a really great insulator.

Also, if you are one of those campers who likes to look for an excuse to wear a cloak, and call your biscuits lembas bread, it's the type of shelter that will probably suit you best.

How safe would it be to have an open fire in a shelter covered with debris?
If it's too dangerous, having a fire outside and bringing hot rocks in to where the fire pit would be sounds like a safer idea.

Really depends on the size of the fire and the distance from the walls and "ceiling".
Hot coals would be safest, but a Dakota Fire hole would probably work too with some forethought and planning. Also in winter you want to make your bed first before building the shelter over it.

Traditionally wigwams were covered with birch bark or skins and they've had campfires in them.
