But realistically I think I'm going to try and get myself 3-4 acres up in the mountains. If I can find a decent place with a well, anyway.

They're selling 5kw solar panel systems here for under 8 grand. That's way more energy than someone like me could use anyway.

My wife and I are looking at finding a place that's 5 to 10 acres on the backroads in the South Plains within 30 or so minutes of our house. We plan to put in a little off-the-grid cabin and a windmill for water. We're not planning on giving up our house, as we both work within walking distance, but it'll be nice in the summers. We're both teachers, so we get lots of time off in the summer to enjoy it.

I've been wanting to be self sufficient or own a small holding for years, seems like the problem in the U.K is there isn't enough land wilderness or otherwise so buying land is really expensive and running off into the woods isn't as easy as it could be because someone will see you and report you, then you'll be evicted.

Impossible to get off the grid today. A teaching job and budgeting skills really do. This summer, my wife and I took the kids to Hot Springs NP, an evening on Beale Street in Memphis, Mammoth Cave NP, GSMNP, the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, some random agricultural museum in Mississippi, and the place I took this picture on a ten-day car trip with lots of one-night campouts. (It takes as long to drive from the west side of Texas to Arkansas as it does to drive from Texarkana to Mammoth cave. The 2 year old girl and six year old boy didn't have any real problems with the driving, but I attribute that to the onboard DVD player and our singing "The Wheels on the Bus" approximately 40,278 times.) Then I got to take the boy and the neighbor's kid to BBNP. Then we visited family in Austin and camped overnight on the beach on Padre Island.

Life is good, the little off-the-grid place will just be icing on what's already a hell of a cake.

My girlfriends dad is fairly off the grid.

He lives on a self sustaining commune on property he purchased.

He's never paid taxes in his life.

He used to never have a drivers license, but after countless run ins with the law he finally got one. Basically because he had to start looking after his kids.

If you REALLY want to, it's do-able.

If the property where he lives isn't owned by the local tax district he's likely paid taxes. But he is NOT off the state's database, especially if he's ever had a driver's license.
