How to protect gear from stealing?

So, my camping gear (tent, backpack, boots, stove, etc...) got stolen. Me and gf went for a morning walk (2-3 km) from our camp, so we didn't have reason to bring everything with us.

Total value of camping gear is not that much, about 500 euros and I got feeling that police will not do anything about it.

My question is how do you guys protect gear when camping or backpacking?

First, that sucks.

Second, if I believe there is a danger of something getting stolen, I bring my shit with me if feasible, or hide it.

Obviously you don't want to tear down your whole camp and put on your full pack for a short morning walk.

This is not meant to flex my powerlevel, but I've mostly camped in the backcountry where access requires hours of hiking. Thieves have to be real motivated to drive, park, hike up without gear, just to score a used tent and a dirty stove. It also means I fear leaving my gear less if I go for a small walk.

You can also make it less attractive to steal (e.g. make it harder to resell). Emboss your name on metal pieces. Don't flaunt shiny new stuff. Keep your shit dingy looking.

I'd advise, and all of these have "if possible" at the end:
- Keep an eye on your gear (e.g. stay in camp, or have a line of sight to your camp/approaches)
- Have someone you trust keep an eye on your gear
- Pack out gear/valuables
- Hide gear somewhere
- Camp in more remote areas, not by the big parking lot next to the highway
- Make your gear less desirable

Either carry it with your or lock it in your vehicle. Anytime you leave something unattended you risk it being stolen. Alternatively you could leave a pitbull inside your tent next time

When I did bike touring we would hang dirty socks on our panniers when we explored a town.

Maybe you can do something similar to make your tent less attractive to would be thieves.

How do I get proper maps for backcountry? I know you can get maps from the USFS. What size are they? Don't they mostly cover small areas? Do you just drive around using wide area highway maps until you find a cool spot, then get FS topo maps for that area?

dont camp around other people or in sight from a road or trail. i see this all the time, people coming from all over the world to camp and hike in our nature, yet they set up their tent next to the bus stop. just why? all it takes is a 100m walk into the bush or behind the first boulder and no one will ever find your camp unless they actively look for it, and bad guys, druggies or n*ggers just doesnt. most common theft around here is done by some drunk guy heading home who gets a stupid idea.

Man, that sucks, and I'm a bit paranoid about this as well. Might be a good idea to get a small GPS locator and sew it into a corner of your tent/backpack or wherever it is concealable, and then track the motherfucking thief down and burn their whole gypsy camp to the ground.

Sorry to hear that OP! Nothing pisses me off more than thieves, I 100% feel you on that. For me I tuck everything that looks like it's valueable away I have a Wilderness Lodge 6 tent (pictured). The front vestibule has a covering, and the windows zip up. If i'm leaving, i stuff everything in there and zip er up tight, try to take any initial temptation away. Otherwise, Lock it in your car, or carry with you. You could (not legal at all) make some rudementary traps, whip someone with a tree, rock, hide a few holes for them to step in... etc.

not him but go on the usgs topo site and youll see they have a variety of sizes from different survey years.
as for finding where to go, look on the forest service unit’s site for for the trailheads for trails listed there. the interactive map thing is also useful. but then yes, once you find your trailhead use free topos or occasionally the trail specific maps they have on the website.

Wow that’s pretty annoying. You probably hit the 0.1% of the time this happens. As someone who this didn’t happen to, it’s easy for me to say I wouldn’t worry about it happening again, unless you go to some shady areas. Were you close to a trailhead? I couldn’t even imagine carrying my shit, plus someone else’s for 4-5+ miles out of the woods

I spoke with police officer, basically they will do their best to find thieves. Also, if I spot my gear on the classified ads, I can give them a call and they will go with me... which is really nice. This leads me to gear identification.

Someone suggested engraving name. I think i'Il will write my name or id number on paper, zip it in a bag and hide it somewhere… maybe in tent poles or something. Camera is also a good option.

There were no gypsies, we camped in a woods, about 300 meters from main trail. All valuables were locked in a car…. luckily...
