Fishing today was really slow in my area, only caught one this morning but was able to smoke it which was the first time I've ever smoked fish, and it was absolutely amazing, not dry in the slightest bit and fall of the bone.

Recently got a pole, some line, and will be getting a spinner or two. Really excited, haven't been fishing for a decade; I did it last in Boy Scouts. What should I take with me when I go fishing? Hoping to hike in a little ways. Is it worth the effort of hauling the hardware in to eat the fish straight from the river? I've a little stove and some camp utensils I could use. Centerpins seems to be very popular in Toronto for river trout and salmon fishing.

Here's everything I did:

-Gut and clean trout, remove gills etc, cut slits onto each side.
-Dry brine of half cup brown sugar and half cup salt and rub it into every crevice, then leave it in the fridge for 2 hours
-after two hours remove trout, wash it clean removing all of the salt and sugar, pat dry and place into the fridge to for an adittonal hour
-using my charcoal grill, set lit charcoal to one side and sprinkle a decent handful of apple wood chips overtop. Place trout on the opposite side away from direct heat and make sure you prop open the cavity with toothpicks

I smoked it for 1hr15mins occasionally adding handful of wood chips at a time as I saw the smoke output begin to die out. Recipes called for longer brine times but since I wanted it for dinner I shortened it a bit, and since it turned out so good, I won't change anything most likely

Also I love to fry em. Flour and a little bit of paprika for color and flavor (not too much since it burns easy) and shake n bake it in a bag, then toss em into a deep pan with canola oil, turning every 5mins or so so it doesn't burn. Then just keep at it, the crispier the better. You can't eat through the bone and all, the head tail and fins are the best part.

These are two I fried from the day before yesterday when I limited out

I mostly fish salt so I use a boat net that’s been cut down for shore and what not, but I’m sure there’s some cheap ones that’ll cost less than $50 dollars for freshwater fishing if that’s what you’re doing. I’d also recommend a rubber netted one instead of string, it’s a pain when your lures get stuck in the netting.

Oh also there’s an alligator gar about, what do I hunt alligator gar with? I had it hooked up about six months ago on a normal line on some catfish dough and a number 1 hook, but I wants using a steel leader and it broke off close to getting it in, almost broke my ugly stick, literally had it doubled over.

dunno about mullet but typically you catch gar on hookless rigs, the most common is an unbraided nylon rope thats been brushed straight and tied into a gar fly. they bite on it and shake their head like a dog and it gets wrapped up around their teeth and they're nigh helpless

Early in spring like right now I like to go when waters warmest, so the afternoon and sometimes into sunset. By say a few weeks from now (late may- early June) i say 2 hours before and 1 hour after sunset, and the same for dawn. I usually follow this till the fall run, where I usually catch my most/biggest fish an hour before sunset or sunrise.

Most of my favorite spots are mud flats that are only fishable at high tide, but this early in the spring when the water is cold I've found that the fish are pretty much everywhere. Later in the summer they'll move deeper, especially on warmer bayside areas.

I am going to replace the treble hooks on my lures with single hooks. I can't stomach seeing another fish gutted by treble hooks. Even if those hooks would be very large in comparison to some of the lures? I intend to do this on my crankbaits, spinnerbaits, top waters, mepps spinners, etc. so there are large differences in the lure size.

There are great spots for fishing in NJ. I used to fish a lot nears blairstown and into the Delaware water gap. There are some amazing small native streams around as well as the regularly stocked creeks. Then the Delaware river offers a lot of larger fish.

Also, single hooks look useful for catch and release, especially if you crimp the barbs or if they come barbless. Yellowstone national park, for example, wants barbless hooks and furthermore requires that you return cutties alive.

There's nothing worse than getting a barbed treble hook stuck in your finger. That alone should be a major reason to use barbless single hooks.
Plus significantly less snags in my experience too, if you attach the hook pointing upwards.

I've never had issues with bass. If they really want to throw your hook by jumping hard, they will.
After all, people use "single hooks" like jigheads and soft plastics, and other worm hooks for bass.
I often rig weedless soft plastics for bass anyways as its more effective where I am with all the thick vegetation and crap in the water.

I fish in urban areas and cities. The amount of organic and non-organic crap in our waters is unbelievable. The prime trout streams where I am in southern Ontario, Canada have very strict rules. Only artificial bait with one single barbless hook is allowed. And of course not a single fish is allowed to be kept. The majority of people who fish in those areas will use fly gear.
Conservations officers come by and check very often. They will run a strand of delicate yarn along the inside and outside of your hook where the barbs are. If any strands of fibres are left on your hook, you'll get a hefty fine.
You can add that to the long list of reason why fishing sucks here.

The city of Toronto spent a ton of money to build a bunch of fishing nodes around the city (mostly on Lake Ontario) a few years ago but most of them are retarded. There's a big sunken tree like 15 feet out of one node that was put there intentionally as structure for fish to hang out. But everyone ends up snagging on that damn tree and it seems like nobody catches anything at that spot anyways.
Most of the other nodes are snag fests too because of how many dead branches, garbage, and scrap metal end up getting lodged in the rocks.
Oh and Toronto ponds get insane amounts of vegetation during the summer too.

I don't mind the stricter regulations, a few places I have fished with strict regulations have usually resulted in more productive fishing.

Minersville Reservoir in Utah is not barbless but only allows artificial flies or lures and the limit is one trout over 22". This resulted in a lot of large fish there.

I've heard of game officers running dental floss over hooks as well looking for barbs, it always makes me paranoid mine aren't flat enough when I crimp them down myself.

Similar time I was clamming and about the same distance for several hours. No sight line. Got back and truck unlocked, probably $500 in cd's on the seat, camera in the back.

Space is not a premium and portability is generally not valued in the USDM. Vehicles are bigger and can easily fit long one piece rods. Power fishing is also the dominant style so one piece rods are favoured.
Over in Japan however, its a different story. Due to their circumstances, they have a wider range of options for 3, 4, and 5 piece rods. Their salt water game is also far more advanced and finesse oriented.

Should I buy a fish finder unit? I fish really pressured waters and shallow fishing is basically a no go for most of the year. I only have a kayak, so I can’t fish every spot on bigger lakes. These factors lead to a lot of days being skunked. The only two solutions I see to this is to either get on the water super early (which isn’t always possible) or to get a fish finder. Does it seem like a good investment for someone like me?

Yes. I know your fishing freshwater but when I fish salt in my kayak I have a small fish finder attached to mine, I usually don’t use because I have knowledge of where structure is and what not, but it has helped me beat skunks many times. It’s a shame they’re expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I love fishing tricky areas, lots of snags and shit like that, it's like it improves my fishing ten fold. Even in put and take lakes which I don't fish that often, it seems like the fish know where the anglers can't usually reach them, of course its just because they like to hang out there but I like the thought. The local put which is now closed had a particular area where trees left only 50-100cm of space between branches and the water, covering maybe 25 square meters (or 245 hamburgers) making for tricky fishing but very giving on rough days. Yeeting a lure deep into that area was usually enough to catch atleast one. Also having serveral mongs mire me casually repeatedly cast into that area without snagging was nice, fuck off casuals. Also I don't understand your complaining about regulations and shit like that. We, nationally, haven't got alot of control, I've never personally seen any control happen despite people sometimes fishing in schools with 5 trebles and lead, especially the rapefugees practise this and that alone should be a ticket home for them if you ask me.

I probably snag them behind me on the grass because if there's one thing I'm good at its usually the knots

Probably qualifies as a crankbait. Pike would hit it, and depending on the size maybe perch. No question I'd toss that at pike for a few hours very much expecting something to happen. If you have them really small, like 3g trout would probably be Interrested aswell

Put a small tackle box with your "generals" in it (the 5 or so baits you use most often). Also keep other boxes with hooks, split shot, swivels, line stoppers, etc. Most importantly keep your tools on you. Pliers, snips, I even hang a water bottle off of mine so I can be completely hands frew. I float fish for steelhead and I never realized how bad I needed a vest until my brother in law bought me one for Christmas.

People will proceed to talk about fishing in that area. Look at what fish are being targeted. Find guide books or do online research to look at typical lures/bait. Buy said lures/bait. Do more research on feeding habits, spawn cycles, preferred habitat.

Yeah you’ll get skunked a lot while you still suck but whatever. As long as you aren’t just aimlessly casting for 4 hours and actually note the conditions and work on casting accuracy you’ll get good eventually.

Yes. The more pressure a spot receives, the rarer and more hook shy good sized fish become. This is why Japan loves ultralight and BFS so much. Basically all of Japan is over fished, and finesse methods are more likely to entice hook shy fish.

I have an Echo Carbon XL 7'6 3wt fly rod.
How big/heavy of a fish can I realistically catch with this rod before its at risk of breaking? I fish in cities and urban areas so the fish don't get too big. I obviously won't be targeting pike on this setup, it'll mostly be panfish, bass, and a variety of trout in rivers.
Just trying to figure out if I really need to spend more money on a 6 or 7wt, budget's kinda tight at the moment.

If you fight the fish with the butt of the rod you'll be fine. The line should break long before rod.

Controlling the fish and casting large wet streamers are where the weight is going to suffer. Its not ideal but I wouldn't shy away from potentially hooking a big fish.

I currently have a couple 5wt's, one floating and one sinking line, but my next rod will be 2 or 3wt. That seems like a really fun rod.

What size streamers/wet flies should I be casting on my 3wt with a floating line? I've mostly been casting dries and bead head nymphs under a foam bobber for panfish but I want to start targeting larger fish.
I use Rio PowerFlex Trout leader and tippet and they're known to be a lot stronger than their rating.

Most of the kids in my area who fish regularly all come from money as well. Their parents own cottages on the lake, bass boats, buy them nice gear, etc.

I started from literally nothing. No one in my family even fished. Had to learn everything myself with only walking access to highly pressured fishing spots in the city. I still don't own any private property on the water or a boat. At least I now have a bicycle and don't have to walk for hours.

I’m planning on starting with some bare land with water access to a good fishing lake when I have the money. My extended relatives did this, starting with a bare lot and then using a camper/building a shitty garage for like 10 years until they had the money to build a cabin. My immediate family started with a lake lot with a small shack. My family isn’t anywhere near rich. You can find affordable plots of land if you’ve got the time to put into it. I've noticed that the fish will bite the lure and not be hooked more often, and once hooked they get off easier since I also pushed down the barbs on my hooks. Overall though it just increases the difficulty level but you still get as many strikes so its really on you to catch them.
