>How?Get out of debt first, otherwise finances turn into a spiral and being homeless stops being a choice. And it needs to be a choice if you want to enjoy it. Next, make sure you have all of your gear and know how to repair it by hand. Start walking towards the best weather for the season, with a vague destination in mind (fishing lakes are key, here). Be prepared to live off wild grain, fish, berries and greens. Be prepared to clean yourself in the same water you drink and catch your dinner in; do NOT use soap in a lake! Try to not stay at a single lake more than a couple weeks, per NF guidelines, before moving again. Mostly, it's just a mental game; if you think of it as an adventure you'll enjoy it, if you're doing it because you think you don't have a choice, it'll be hell.
>shower with a Gym membership?I bathed in lakes, streams, creeks, etc.
>busted by cops?Every cop I've run into has been helpful; giving me directions to places to hitch a ride, where I can sleep without being bothered, one even gave me a ride to a park and said he doesn't check for vagrants until 10am, etc.
>occasional work money? I didn't, but I only made it for six months on $200 the first time. After that I started staying at lakes closer to the town my mother lives in, using her address for mail and doing plasma once a week when I visited. I did that for four years before my car's transmission crapped out and screwed up my system. My fault for relying on it.
