First stand the wood on the ground and split it until it won't stand on it's own anymore.
Now take a large piece of wood as a base.
Hold your split wood parallel to the axes handle so it touches the edge, and smack the wood and the axe against the base.
With a small knife (standard Mora, SAK etc):
carve a baton and a wedge.
baton your knife into the wood you want to split about 1cm deeper than the blade is wide.
Set the wedge on top of the knife, baton it in a bit, pull out the knife and baton the wedge until the wood splits.
With a large knife (machete, Glock 79 etc):
Baton the knife into the wood, trying to twist it between strikes. Once it does twist, stop batoning and rip the pieces of wood apart.
