I need your help fellow /out/doorsman. So I have seen two of pic related now in southern VA. Ive dealt with hornets in the area all my life, what I saw were not those. No, I didnt see a cicada killer either. For those who dont know, these things have invaded the usa recently on the west coast, but I fear they are already on the eastern seaboard spreading. I've reached out to multiple departments in Virginia, but have gotten the same bullshit excuses for an investigation. They want a picture, and I'll be heading back to where I saw them to see if I can photograph/kill one. I'm wondering if anyone in sova could help me out in the search, specifically in the south central area of the state. Specifically, Henry, pittsylvania, patrick, Halifax, Campbell, Franklin, and Bedford counties. These were seen close to the border of nc, so for anyone close to those va counties should be on the lookout as well. Again, I have been stung by Hornets, done beekeeping in the past, and am a local to the area. I have never seen a hornet of this size/shape or demeanor. Stay safe out there.

I'm not sure if they're found in Americas but what you're describing could also have been dolichovespula media queen. They are larger than common European hornets and have quite an odd coloration somewhat similar to that of vespa mandarinia, and right now is the time when new queens are flying around finding a place to nest.

>>1753053 They are species of European hornets in the us, and the ones I've seen/stung by are similar to pic related. The hornet I saw did not have the gradient color on their head, it was a burnt orange/golden yellow. It also was the same color as its head as on its abdomen with the exception of dark brown stripes. It could of been a queen hornet, maybe. I've not seen one in person. But both these guys were much larger than the hornets me or the people I was with have seen.

>>1753030 Western NC here. Had a hive of these bastards in an outbuilding. Nuked the hell out of them with a can of wasp killer. Had to do it three times before they all died.

>>1753101 Yeah, I looked that up and did some digging on all know hornets in my area after seeing them a second time. I doubt it was that. Sent a picture to the people I was with, they verified it was not what you posted.
One thing I found odd is how much the hornets I saw let their abdomen droop while in flight. Something I had never seen in the hornets in my area, wasp and dirt dobbers sure.
>>1753096 Nice larp lol

>>1753168 I'm not too worried about their lethality, more concerned about their effect on agriculture/european bees. I also wonder what's going to happen when they come into contact with africanized bees in the southern us as well.

>>1756769 These just started showing in WA, if you sighted them in VA I would report it to the news or someone who knows what they are talking about.
These hornets kick US bees asses because they don't know how to fight them with their body heat like asian bees do.

>>1756670 I've seen a mantid (unsure of species it was fat and colorful) fight the deadliest scorpion in Iraq. Scorpion stung it about a dozen times and all the mantis did was play dead, let the scorpion grab it with it's claws and then, now that the scorpion was in striking distance, proceed to year it into 3 pieces. I'm pretty sure they are immune to venom.
