Thought about getting one to back up my filtration system if I was in an area known to harbor viruses in the water, but that's usually not an issue in the high desert.

Why do most filters come without the active carbon layer that helps clean up chemical contamination? Do companies assume people only travel in virgin lands untouched by industry or modern farming?

One of my hiking buddies used to use UV, possibly still does but he moved, I've always used a Sawyer mini, neither of us have ever had any problems, but we tend to prefer being in more remote areas where water contamination is less likely to begin with. Contaminated water is actually pretty rare; I knew a guy who hiked the PCT without purifying at all and didn't have problems, but it doesn't personally seem worth the risk to me to shave a few grams.

gonna be on a salt lake connected to the ocean for a few days, maybe longer, and wanted to get yalls opinions on desalinators
can make my own still if it comes down to that and fuel to keep it boiling is not an issue as the area is wooded but then i'd have to babysit both a campsite and a boat

I have a hiker pro filter I turned into a gravity setup that works great for most needs but I have a steripen as well and they do work great, but you need to start with "clean" water you really dont want to scoop out of a lake and use it. Streams in the sierras tho... oh yea! Fuck that water is good!

How do you use it? Do you have to lay on the ground all awkwardly with your face 18” from the water and dangle the hose in the water source, and then drink like that, like a life straw? Sounds fucking awful. Why not just get a bottle and a sawyer and drink at your leisure, and not have to wait til you get to the next stream or pond?

I camp/hike the Cascades. Just find a clear stream, fill my bottle, boil it, and cool it down in the same stream.
Takes 10 minutes+firewood-time. More money or effort seems a waste to me.

most of the trails in my area have a ice cold, crystal clean streams coming in from the mountains so I think the steripen would work great, plus its really lightweight and doesnt take much room
