Well, /out/, it's happening. After almost 12 years living in glorious Berkeley with near-perfect weather and day access to the ocean, redwood forests, the Santa Cruz mountains, Yosemite, and Tahoe, I'll be moving to Austin, TX in a couple months. On the plus side, I'll have a very well paying job vs being an impoverished student and will be able to travel more. How fucked am I /out/wise?

I live in Colorado and really enjoy the public land but I will never own 150 acres of private land. No place to peacefully hike or hunt. Every weekend is a mad max parade of tacomas and jeeps along all highways out of Denver to the national forest. I still manage to find refuge but I grew up in Oklahoma. I've never felt more peace outside than when wandering my parent's land fishing in farm ponds or hunting a friend's land for turkey or deer. Private out is different but it's really good sometimes.

Unironically go to louisiana for outdoor activities. At least they have Kisatchie national forest. Texas has Big Bend NP and the hidden gem Guadeloupe Mountains NP, but you will soon realize west texas is essentially another country and you will waste an entire miserable day driving through it. I hate west texas so fucking much. Its literally hell and it goes on forever.

Source: me, who has done this all before and has to drive through west texas again this weekend.

I went to Austin for a wedding last year, bbq is nice at least but it's pretty /in/. I saw some huge bass just cruisin' in the shallows of that river than runs through and the water is crystal clear.

you will find austin similar to home, its been pretty californized. the hill country is real pretty and full of wineries/breweries/bbq to do after your activities, but on weekends everything will be full of active austinites. anything decent backcountry is either a drive to forests in east texas/arkansas or west to the desert. or learn to like water activities with heavy drinking as the only way to survive being outside in the summer

You must have it confused with New Mexico and Arizona. West Texas HAS NO FEATURES. Its just fucking dirt that goes on forever. I loved driving through the other desert states. West texas is different, its like they isolated the worst part of the country into one political boundry.

Good on you mate. I've lived in Berkeley for 6 years now and I'm getting tired of the dirtyness, try-hard wokeness, etc etc. Been looking to make a move like you for a while. I think it'll be a great change of pace, I know tons of people that moved to Austin because they absolutely love it (and love being able to afford a house). I'm sure you'll find plenty of /out/ places to love out there too. I hear there a lot of cool watering holes around Austin too.

this guy is right, i'm from the midwest, a place with more /out/ than Texas, and even then visiting northern California was like a revelation. it is so good, outdoor paradise aside from the crowding and extra restrictions. texas is going to seem like purgatory by comparison, because it is.
