Cheap and breathable. I like those Eddie Bauer adventure treks they are like $16 at Costco. I buy 2-3 pairs. This round had lasted me more than a year and I climb in them almost every day plus just wear them around. In contrast when I first started to climb I bought a pair of $70 prana stretch Zions that ripped on the 2nd climb I took them on.

I got some ridiculously overpriced pants from montbell that never really fit well and disappointed the fuck out of me. Meanwhile I payed like 50 bucks for some amazing pants from patagonia that last the 3 seasons perfectly. Best pants purchase ever.

Relaxed fit is also ok. Their standard firehouse pants are also very good and a bit more durable, but these are lighter. Both good.

Wow, what a mild climate. You must enjoy the weather? I'd go with some synthetic blend pants, possibly convertibles if you fancy the extra breathability. Anything more detailed will really depend on what you plan on doing. Things to look for when shopping around:
Stitching on belt loops/ fly construction (make sure it's sturdy), how relaxed/tight the fit is, how much abrasion resistance you need.
You're in such a mild climate you have a very wide range of options. I still wouldn't choose denim or cotton for obvious reasons, and no need to get super thick materials unless you need it for your activities.

Prana strech Zion (non zip is my preference) hands down are the best outdoors pants I have ever used. Good range of motion, aren’t baggy and look professional.
Small side zipper pocket designed so you can access while in a harness is a nice touch. Intergrated belt is good for fit but without extra weight.
They are my standard work pant and I have 4 pairs now. Original pair are still going strong.

Pants are the most disposable garment, and often the least comfortable. The most difficult part is fashion trends today dictate most pant designs wearing pants mid cheek.
I agree that the Prana Zion's are pretty good. I often just use Dickies double knee loose or 874 for the higher rise, and that they are fairly cheap, durable, and flexible. You can pair an exterior pair of durable pants with something like a polartec/fleece liner for warmth as well as I often do in winter.

Honestly thought, I like the way Kiwi's will wear shorts with their Swanndri's. Knee's are often the least cold. Just use gaiters and long socks/puttees underneath.

If you are in subtropical though, i'd use less or focus on comfort/humidity first unless you need brush protection.

Update: besides the stitching not looking straight, I managed to fuck up making a stop on one leg so the thread will probably detach sooner or later. If you do your own hems, please share your tips.
Now pants length is good though, thanks for showing me the way. I usually had shops do it when buying pants but for /out/ pants they usually don't offer this kind of service because of the kind of shop they are.
