I know your pain brother. My favorite rat-l-trap lure was pic related, I think it was only $7-8 but it was always really successful at my local lake and the ponds I have access to. I loved to throw it at daybreak on the lake to catch white bass and the occasional striper hybrid. Last week fishing in a pond I hooked a largemouth that went airborne and managed to hang the line on an exposed tree stump and snapped it. I know I can just order another one but the sinking feeling in my tummy when it happened was awful

Flex sealed the bottom of my jon boat. I tightened up the rivets and it only seeped a tiny bit but now she should be 100% watertight. Planning on giving it a paint job later. Thinking olive drab.

I had a Whopper Plopper I lost on like the 2nd cast, was so heavy I landed it on the bank across the way instead of the water and the only way to get there would be climbing down a bank and hopping a fence off I-95.

Gold colors are always a best.

Oh and I lost a Lucky Craft from that alcoholic Texan, it was probably my favorite of the Secret Santa stuff I got from him, that was 2nd or 3rd cast on the Intercoastal with all these snags. And pic related X-Rap made it one cast in the same spot.

I am justifying getting a new rod and reel to throw heavy swim baits and football jigs. Today I was finally able to feel the St. Croix Mojo Bass medium heavy fast and Daiwa Tatula caster in person. Both felt pretty good but I noticed like 5 different versions of the Tatula and backed out of purchasing anything yet. Does anyone know the differences between them all? Also, any other bass rods I should research?

There is not even any more trout at all cunt, most of the rivers are totally dry thanks to the greedy cunts sucking up huge amounts for irrigation so it now only flow subsurface. What rivers are left are green, sludgy and devoid of life.

What filleting knives do you use?

I've been using the large blade on my SAK for smaller fish and it's been working great for me since it's thin, and I like the stiffness of it. The Rapala fillet knife I have has barely been touched since the SAK is so handy.

I catch bass all day every day with a $10 Shakespeare Walmart combo. The rod and reel have nothing to do with it. I use a split shot rig and worms. My drunk uncle came by the other day and hit 3 bass in 20 minutes. I just landed this guy an hour ago. Save your money for accessories and bait. $20 is enough to catch most freshwater fish out there. That's all I did when I was learning to use a baitcaster (didn't want to crows nest it when out and get better accuracy); just a ball sinker to mimic the load, and it worked well

I used a pool for lures to test depth and control

Real talk man. I had to go take a pic of my first rod and reel when I picked up fishing 2 summers ago. I bought this rod with no reel at a garage sale for $5. It's 5'6" and has no writing other than the name "quantum", then picked up a zebco 202 with 10# line for literally $7 at a big box store. Grabbed the cheapest pack of sinkers, hooks, and plastic worms Walmart had and started fishing the pond at my local park. Standard drop shot rig still my favorite. Out there catching bass for a $20 bill. I treated myself to some better gear this year and am keeping the cheap rig around to loan out or teach people on.

New to trout fishing and picked up some flies. Planning to fish local ponds, some that are stocked each spring, some that used to be stocked but are no longer but still have fish in them. They stocked with brown, rainbow, and brook trout. Can someone give me a rundown on these flies I picked up or what I should start with? Should I use the big fucker or start with the smaller ones?

Depending on the size of a trout that big ass wooly bugger may or may not work. Trout will eat anything up to 1/3 rd their body size. That being said, they mostly eat small bug larvae. For starting out on stocked trout, a grasshopper thrown up stream and twitched in the current as it goes past/over the head of the trout is a good beginner method. Especially with stocked trout that have been feeding up since birth. As far as fly selection. You have a couple good looking nymphs which are going to be very successful. The idea with flies is to match the hatch. Where the bug you throw matches the bugs in the water. However if you throw a good looking bug with good presentation at a fish, he will eat it. For trout in a pond, use a hopper as a “strike indicator” of sorts about 2’ above a nymph. Twitching the hopper through the water will give life to the hopper and move the nymph around. Also look into making flies yourself. Most of my flies are home made by hand with no/minimal tools. Some are literally made of paracord and have caught stocker bows that will attack anything. For more specific advice, go talk to a boomer at the local big box store on what flies they use and local honey holes.

Get yourself an Ugly Stik Elite Medium rod and a Shimano Sienna FG 2500HG. Rod is $50, reel is a $30 one but feels like most $50+ reels. They just refreshed the design on that reel and I think you can't beat it for the price. It's got high gearing and smooth as hell. There are other rods for that price with more "sensitivity" but that one combines durability and decent sensitivity is why I like it.

Just went out paddling with my mum on her two person sea kayak, figured I'd take my little jigging rod and cast a few lines, pulled in four little snapper in the span of 10 minutes. This kayak fishing shit is dope, gotta get me one. Landing them is a cunt though and one decent size kahawai got away by swimming under the boat like a nigger.

They're too small for me. I like little tinnies, because you still have width, open space, and you can still row if that's your thing (and you can also have a 5HP on it to get some speed if you have to go somewhere quickly).

Unless you take a knife and intentionally jab it in to the boat, there's not a lot to be worried about. Synthetic polymers these days are really tough, especially if you spend the money on a good one. It's a common misconception that inflatable boats are as fragile as a balloon and that one pointy object will pop it.

personally when they're spawning I don't see a point in fishing them. at best you're stressing them during a stressful time. at worst you catch a bass that didn't really have the energy for that fight because he's been watching his bed all week instead of eating and he dies after being released and that spawn bed dies with him.

It's considered some sort of mark of prowess to be able to incite a defensive bite and hook set before they release the lure so you can land a spawning bass but personally I like to fish pre-spawn, fuck off for a week or two after I know they're on bed, and resume fishing post-spawn.

I took my friend from work out fishing yesterday, but conditions were shitty. Sustained 20mph wind, gusts much stronger than that, 4 inches of chop easy, off and on rain.
I got one grab on a rubber frog then lost it, and no one we talked to all day haf caught anything, but i at least managed to get him a few dinks, and he has a fishing license so i can take him durkng better conditions

You can't just replace treble hooks on plugs with just any hook. You need plug hooks, which have different eyelets. Generally, I used size 8 to size 6 plug hooks to replace all my trebles. Consider going barbless as you get better at fishing for trout.

If you've been around here long enough or even just read the past few threads or so, you will know that the Ugly Stik Elite (with the cork grip) is the best bang for your buck indestructible rod for a beginner.
With all the sales going on right now I'm sure you can find a Shimano, Daiwa, or Fenwick rod for around the same price or maybe just a bit more.

When I did it with dad typically we'd float around on a boat and when we saw one in the water one of us would shine a spotlight on it to blind it while we floated over and the other would stab it with the gig while it was blind. We caught about a dozen in an hour then went home and had fried frog legs. Was thinking it would be neat to have frog for dinner every now and then

how do you approach crowded fishing areas?

I went with my mom & step-dad fishing at a dock on nearby lake and the dock was a little crowded, but the guys on boats were insufferable, I had to leave before I got arrested for killing a fucking boomer. this one old cunt just comes flying up to the dock and shouts "YOU NEED TO GET THOSE LINES OUT OF THE WATER THEY BETTER NOT GET IN MY PROP" as he plows across 5 different peoples lines, not even slowing to try and give them a chance to reel them in. one of the most infuriating moments of my life right there, this old shithead looked about 75. I would have jumped on his boat and beat him if he was ~20 years younger. but this similar behavior repeated itself multiple times before we decided to pack up and leave

I will eventually go to jail if I continue fishing at places like this

Brother I have a dock and I had a boomer and his son literally bump against my dock this morning while I had 4 lines out. I catch bass and catfish; I said ‘morning’ and they responded with a dip spit and a sip of Mt Dew. I went 4 years no issue and then in 2020 I had 7 people cast lines over mine in 2 weeks. Disclaimer: I know nothing about bass fishing. All this advice is geared towards inshore fishing.

For inshore fishing you'll want at least 20lb braid. I fish with 30 lb braid on a Daiwa Saltist 3000 on a medium rod. For leaders I use anywhere from 15 to 30 lb flouro, depending on what jigs/hooks/lures I'm using (I even have some wire leader for gatcha plugs during spanish mackerel runs). Inshore currents can get pretty intense, especially during transitions from high to low tide, during which times a heavy (think at least 3 or 4 oz) sinker will be needed to get your baits down. During a slack high tide however, you could typically do with 2 oz for bait fishing (I suggest live shrimp or mullet) and 1/4 oz (give or take depending on depth) for jigs.

When spanish mackerel are making their runs, a topwater Gatcha plug (7/8 or 1 oz) will be ideal. Or really any silver spoon. Hell, I bet a 1 oz sheet of polished stainless steel with a hook attached could do it.

Between the two rods you're considering, get the one that can handle this range of braided line and lure weights. Either one will handle the fish just fine, but the rod will make or break the ease with which you can utilize the tackle.

This was my solution. Get the heaviest cheapest rod from Walmart with the biggest weight and send it when somebody gets obnoxious.

Boomers on boats are retards on jet skis are annoying though. It’s not hard for them to keep off the shoreline a little bit, but there is always that asshole.

I had a #4 with that brown skirt and the metallic pink blade and that was my snakehead killer lure... until I went fishing with Anon one day and let him borrow it and he snagged it on an alligator. I had another one I loved with the natural skirt and a chartruese blade, I think that was an Agila #2, I eventually lost it and I could never find the same color combo to replace it.

I got down on some of those Blue Fox Vibrax spinners too, they’re not the same as Mepps, but sometimes they do real good because they have that little bell that gives off a different vibration which can draw sneks out of their holes.

iv been surprised how close to my kayak they would bite too, i think its because the spinner rises a bit and they think the lure might be going for a surface strike, and they like to grab it close to the surface

just so easy and nice to fish. most of the time ill have a bobber bait set up, then cast spinners out to pass the time. sometimes casting near the bobber brings some action to the bait as well.

I heard the Husky Jerks aren't as good or durable as the X-Raps.
Too bad the X-Raps don't have the firetiger colour which I've been told is the most effective for southern Ontario pike.
There's also a ton of crap in the waters I fish in so I hope I don't get hung up and lose an expensive lure. I always get anxious when I let the lure sink for a bit.

I fish 3 $10 poles and land whoppers all day on the lake. It’s not the gear that matters. I’ve caught bass with nothing more than a line with a hook and using my hands to pull up and down. Nothing more satisfying than pulling a 6 pound bass with a Walmart rig while a forty thousand dollar bass boat watches. I’m sure having a thousand gulp minnows and a fish finder on a $250 set up catches fish but don’t be bitter that cheap setups can outfish the most expensive gear. My PB was caught on a half-pole.

How the fuck do I keep these things? I have them in a coffee can with some dirt, but the bottom is rock hard and all the worms just stay in a clump 3 inches above the bottom. It's also starting to smell but Ihave not found any dead worms so I don't know where that's coming from. I want to move them into something better so that I don't have to take them all with me every time I go fishing.

I can also launch near nelson and cottonwood cove. Lots of fishing in lake mead and the Colorado river, though I can't really get to all of them with a pond prowler / 3.5hp combo, even on really nice days. Lake mead isn't the only lake though!

You don't need expensive gear to catch fish. You just need terminal tackle that the fish are willing to bite. Starving 3rd world children use 2nd hand rope and scraps of metal to catch fish for the village. For me, expensive gear has one or more features that makes fishing more pleasant, but the fish don't give 2 shits about it. The pricetag in fishing gear is all about the fisherman and making his experience more fun. We all have the point where the returns are diminishing. For some people, that point is the $10 range and for others, it's at the $1000 range.

My suggestion, dumb as it is. On plastic boats get a small bucket and fill it with concrete with a piece of bent metal making a ring or U out of the concrete, any metal will do as long as it holds, even rebar. Use that as an anchor and use good rope instead of chain to cast it. That way if you really need to gtfo to avoid weather, nasty waves from speedboats, etc. you can cut it and gun it for shore. I say this because there's times your anchor will snag, and hanging tight in a 140lb boat isn't going to work in your favor if a storm rolls in.

I'll bite. Using a swivel drastically effects the presentation and weight distribution of a lure. Try putting one of your snaps on a topwater frog, and you'll notice the swivel pulls the nose of the lure down and creates unnecessary extra weight. snap swivelis not even needed and only adds more “stuff” on your line that can potentially cause problems and/or spookfish.

The only time I'd use a steel leader is throwing oversized rooster tails and deep diving cranks for pike and muskie.

If you have a braid backing and want to be able to quickly change lures with their respective flouro leaders then a swivel is very convenient. It's a matter of matching swivel sizes and weights. It's very convenient for inshore fishing where being able to switch from jigs to topwater lures to carolina rigs quickly and conveniently is important, especially when fishing from a kayak.

The next rig doesn’t really work in my city either because of all the junk in the water. I literally can’t let it hit bottom otherwise it’s a guaranteed snag.
I’ve given up and started using a weighted EWG hook rigged weedless with a soft plastic creature bait. Still get snagged every now and then but less than the ned rig with exposed hook.

Your fine dude, I have hooks and line thats 6 years old that I still use without issue. This is assuming being stored indoors out of sunlight.

This 100%. I was kinda lucky and got this advice from the guy who owned the tackle shop when I was first gearing up. He said something to the effect of the fish only see your bait and your knots are what bring them in, everything else is for you.

I keep European night crawlers in my fridge too, they've been good so far for about 8 months. I bought 500 online and put half in the fridge and half outside, the guys outside dies when the temps went over 75f but the ones in the fridge are doing great! Bedding is 50%coco coir and 50% clean dirt I feed coffee grounds and "chick starter" thats been blended to a powder. The tubs are just 2 plastic shoeboxes nested, the inner one holding the bedding and worms with perforated bottom to drain extra water/worm juice and air holes around the top. No smell, nice and clean. Once a week I drain the water in the bottom add water and feed. Always having night crawlers has been a game changer for me.
