White's and Nick's are both beyond excellent, but because of the steep price tag, people on this board like to hate them.

If you can afford it, you'll be hard pressed to find a tougher, better built boot.

Buy Limmers and ignore the 8 inch hike LARP in Nick's if you need to go welted. German made for 300. You can usually find some on eBay.
I don't know why these retards suggest hiking in wildland fire boots. Is it the same wheelchair hiker that keeps suggesting then?
Plus resoles are much cheaper.

I've always had 6in boots, but I do a lot of off-trail soil sampling in thick brush and rocky terrain. Would I benefit from a pair of 9in Nicks over my existing pair of 6in Thoroughgoods? My bush hiking boot also needs to have a steel toe for safety regulations.

In a day? Yes thats right , no more than ten especially because I hike very steep and rocky trails at high elevation. I usually make camp at the edge of the tree line and spend the days exploring ridges.
I am guessing you are a fan of the appalachian trail?
Different terrains require different gear

you do see a fair number of heavy euro hikers on guys hunting high up and offtrail, your lowa tibet/asolo 520/scarpa fuego type boots, but none of those are gyw. nobody wears spokane loggers for serious walking.

actually, if anything, fancy goodyear welted hiking boots are more common back east--limmers are actual hiking boots with a pretty strong presence in new england. expensive and heavy, but much closer to the "buy it for life practical hiking boot" ideal than nicks/whites/wesco/etc

Ordered a pair of Frank's, should be done in the next week or so, excited to break them in. Everyone talks about milage and duration, the durability of these boots is more suited for Bushcraft or hunting than long hikes
