For me, it's my Coleman stainless steel cook set with 2 pots that my sister gave me for Christmas in 1991
Even on long backpacking trips, I cook more than just freeze dried, and having 2 pots is super convenient

I never skimp on guy lines or pegs. Not worth sacrificing shelter integrity for small weight savings. Also I think a light splash bivvy it's worth the weight penalty.
Everything else is pretty much as might as it can be.

I carry a Thermarest Uno chair for my back.
And a stainless steel pot with a deep/tall lid, cause I don't want cancer from aluminum pots and I don't wanna burn my food in a titanium pot.

Without those, I would be in the ultralight territory. But I'm happy as is.
Not getting ANY fatigue from the weight I carry is fucking amazing.

Granted with age you wont be able to carry as much as you do in your 20s. Lowering the load has been a natural process for me over the last 5 years. I used to bring a 120L chevalier backpack for my 3+ days outings for 10 years.
Now I use a 55L Bergans pack in the winter months and a 35L Haglöfs the rest of the year. And sometimes a 25L during the mid summer weeks.

I only carry a dumb phone.
I buy real maps and pick out the locations a wanna go to before I leave. I only bring maps to my full week trips, but I rarely look at them while out. Never needed a compass or gps. I have always gone back the same way I went in to the nature. I have a good sense of direction and I pick up on a lot of details along the paths I take. Never been worried or gotten lost.

My camera kit makes up about half my total pack base weight. If it weren’t for all that stuff I could go on a weeklong trek with only a 30L backpack. But it’s worth it.

It’s really not about age so much as why you would WANT to carry things that heavy. You don’t have to cross in to ultralight or be a gramfag but innovations happen for because things can improve. This is of no exception. There’s really not much of a reason to have more than 25-30lbs on your back unless you’re climbing, in colder regions, or doing something work related but those are usually task oriented gear loads and the exception.

I’m impressed you’ve had them that long. I usually snap one a year getting it wedged in a rock or root. Carbon fiber ones are like 9oz each. Besides weight and comfy cork grips, a stick is probably a stick, so your money may be used better elsewhere

So I've discovered something.
If you take a sharp knife and run it across your nail, flakes of your nail come off. I got a lot from just one fingernail (don't worry it still has enough for protection).
I surmise that I can lose 10 grams of weigh by reducing my fingernails to 0.5 grams each.

Bear spray, because it’s effective on all mammals, including two legged ones, it’s easy to hit your target in a stressful situation. And at 8oz it’s 1/5th the weight of a pistol. In bear country you probably want a gun too, but the bear spray makes me feel a lot safer hiking or backpacking alone. But some hikers make fun of me “whoa this guy thinks he’s in Yellowstone haha” but it works for me

My tent and tarp has lines already. I bring part of a cotton twine (it's string really) spool I got a dollar store. It's something to play with, not really necessary. Just for a hike, I might have a smaller tarp+lines but no other cordage/ropes.

Triplines set up to pots and lids with small stones in them so you can wake up when a bear comes and scare them off
I use an Ursack in instead of a bear can
I've only done it in a couple of areas where there are aggressive black bears that are used to getting human food. There were usually some other campers in these areas making a stinky mess, and the bears went there instead. Sloppy campers not protecting their shit is why there are bad bears in the first place

Good advice
I've been asked by rangers a few times on the trail if I had a bear can, and I just lied and said yes. They don't search your pack.
The one time a ranger came into camp and saw an ursack, they did nothing, but all it takes is one hardass, and I'm out some serious coin
I enjoy this cat and mouse game with authority, but the current gf hates it

Bureaucracy, lack of approved testing, lack of money to get testing done. People not knowing how, or not caring, to tie them correctly so they’re worthless. People hanging them too close to camp drawing bears in. There could be a plethora of reasons. Here’s national parks, and there’s also state park restrictions on them not listed

I figure, anti black bear deterrents are mostly a delaying tactic. Even a bear can can be rolled somewhere you can't find it, or off a cliff. The delay gives you a chance to get up and chase the bear off
Honestly, my Ursacks have been more use at keeping rodents out though, and you can't beat the weight when compared to a can
I still have one of the fist models, the yellow one, that you weren't supposed to let sit in the sun

I heard it's unlikely that ursacks will be allowed in the Sierra due to personal beef between the market of the ursack and someone high up in California. I can't remember the details though.

For the record I was in RMNP last sept and ursacks have been approved there. Last time I checked it wasn't mentioned on the website but I spoke to the rangers there when I picked up my permit. You have to use it with the aluminium liner though. Still better than a hard sided can.
Funny little story about picking up my permit. I was hiking the pfiffner traverse so needed one for RMNP for my first night, I was going from milner pass to east inlet junction, one of the more modest days on the route. The rangers had flagged up my permit thinking a mistake had been made. So I explained my plans to them and convinced them I knew what I was doing. They eventually came round and have me my permit dating it was the craziest thing they had issued all year! Made me feel like a badass haha

I brought this quilt from Paria Outdoor, its was light, great quality and really comfy but the size was just to big. Its just nearly got into my 45l pack and took 1/3 of my space.

I got it for 180 bucks, any suggestion for a ULquilt that doens't cost 300+ and is available in europe?

Mostly a meme if you’re taking 50ft of paracord then hook it to the outside of your pack with a carabiner. I keep some extra feet of 1.6mm Zing-it with my food bag. I hang my food to keep feral hogs and rodents out of it. I’ve used it for extra guy lines, and to rig up my umbrella.

I don’t cut it at all - I just roll the top down when I’m done loading it. It makes it easier to pack when the bag reaches out of the top of the pack. They do make a 33 gallon heavy duty 4mil bag for asbestos though that maybe be better, but they’re not carried in stores, whereas the big black contractor bags are

It’s pretty light, but my base weight could be much lighter if I switched to a tent. But that would mean shaving off two or three months of the year because it would be too damn hot.

That was the big selling point for me, then the other advantages were just icing on the cake. Most of those can be overcome with site selection; it’s limited, but totally doable. But nothing will keep me cool if I’m in a tent.

Light, expensive but totally worth it. Had mine for a year and i love it. food flavored coffee sucks and coffee flavored food sucks. having this separate to make REAL coffee is well worth the extra grams.
