I live in New England (NH) but have never really investigated. Is there anything especially of note? It seems sparse as fuck.

You can either travel up thru main to NB, into Nova Scotia and exit from Cape Breton (pic related) via boat to Newf land
or you can Travel up thru Quebec to Labrador and take a boat from Labrador .
Highly recommend driving. Ive never been up the Quebec way but I assume its desolate and the french are not so welcoming to Anglos. zero english speakers north of Quebec city.

it's creepy just thinking about it, i haven't been to all that much in that area but there are some still gorgeous views and truly small town life. would probably not enjoy living there in the winter given the harsh cold and amount of snow, i'll stick to the coast for now

Mainer here, the best thing in your circle is without a doubt the Bigelows. Awesome backpacking, even when you're sharing parts of it with AT through hikers. Actually all the mountains surrounding Moosehead lake are quite nice.

Bigelows were pretty tough too in comparison with the rest of the trail. I honestly think southern maine was the hardest part of the entire trail for me.

Alright I figured I'd ask here since this is a Maine thread. Been in the state about 3 years and currently in the south pretty close to Portland. Enjoy the downtown atmosphere and local sports, but want to move to a spot where I can get a somewhat cheap house, be super close by to trails/fishing/camping/etc. but not be in the middle of fucking nowhere. Anything north of Freeport is foreign territory to me so hopefully someone can throw me some recs of areas that would be fun to scope out.

There seems to be a lot of great houses for sale in Milo for instance, but not sure if there's anything at all to do in the town. Area looks neat given the river flowing through it where I can just go walk a bit and throw my line out. Being somewhat close to an airport would also be nice given how I travel a lot for work and play.

Look around the Eddington/Cliffton area. Pretty close to a lot of trails and hunting, but also pretty close to Bangor(for what that's worth to you).

There aren't even real roads there, the land is all owned by lumber companies. The federal government offered to buy it and make it into a national forest and the locals protested. They like it privately owned, since lumber companies let people use the land anyways, and it keeps the low information tourists out. A lot of Maine is actually easier to access from the Canada side, similar to northern Minnesota. Check out some google satellite and you'll realize how rough a lot of these lumber roads are. You can see a lot of the bridges where there used to be river crossings are gone now. The area legitimately scares me for some reason. Truly an unimaginatively large mosquito hellscape

I work in NW Maine in the summer guiding. In the winter I work and ski in Colorado. The more time I spend out west, the more Maine seems less desirable. The old fuddy duddys, the poverty from mill closure, the vacation home MassHoles, lack of good food, and the bugs are just something you don't run into out West, so much.

OP check out east brook or Franklin. My father's cabin built by my based grandfather and great grandfather is in Franklin and has population of under 500. Everyone is nice. Some guy down the road removed like 9 trees for like 600 bucks. That's like trimming 4 palm trees in Florida. He did most of them for free and the biggest was a fucking monster tree planted in the 1800s based on the rings. Property is fuck cheap and a lot of them live on propane power for electricity and heat. God bless America. This is about as good as it gets for whites. It's a pleasant 30 mile drive to Ellsworth maybe an hour from Bangor depending where you set your house up.

Northern Maine, however, is a food desert where basic ingredients are expensive and gourmet items are non-existent. The food culture is tendies and stale pizza at the gas station, where you pick up your fill of Allen's and hang with your toothless welfare girlfriend.

Biggest Uni in the state is just north of it so despite being like 40k people big there's women, some good restaurants, if you have shit taste in music there's some big buttrock concerts.

Then of course all the /out/ benefits. I've been to Buffalo and I think you'd like it if you're okay with less variety than a big city.

However Maine has way more variety in activities to do across the state, like actually having more than 35 miles of coastline, and a national park.
