So I went camping and only used this poncho as a shelter. It was the first time I'd ever done it with said poncho. I was wondering if there would be any particular advantages of picking up a cheap tarp instead of this apart from not having a hole for the hood stuck in the middle of course.

Also if anybody has any tips for pitching shelters with this thing I'd appreciate it. Feel free to also share general 'tarp camping' tips or experiences in general.

They should have little holes around the sides, tie some 5/50 to surrounding trees low around the base, then use a stick in the center up to the head hole.

That doesn't look like a full size poncho btw, but if you get two then you can tie one underneath as well. It will raise the edges slightly keeping bugs away.

Fire looks awfully close.

Ah I see so you actually put a pole or whatever in the middle where the hood is? Originally I hadn't done any poles but I ended up sticking two in on the side I was using as an entrance just to let some heat from the fire in better but I'll deffinatly give that a go next time.

I would recommend having at least 2,5x2,5m tarp, it gives you enough space to put everything in place. everything smaller than that would be problematic. for me US poncho is simply too small to fit with a backpack comofrtably, not to mention cooking and other campsite routines

my way of having my tarp ready (I use british basha) is to have a long main guyline with additional prusik knots on both ends of basha - you can move the tarp along the guyline tothe left or to the right, setting correct tension thanks to prusiks

also there're 4 fixed guylines in the corners, also adjustable with prusiks.

this way I will never end up with a basha set uneven between two trees, since it's not fixed to the main guyline. I can also remove basha if not needed from over my sleeping place but without removing the guyline.

first step to set it up is to tie the main guyline to the trees (basha hanging freely), then you adjust the basha evenly. whenputting everything down first you remove pegs, then you put basha's prusiks together, then untie the tree knots and your done.

protip: use light coloured tarps - you will have more "light" beneath them

If its a bit more chilly pitch it a bit lower and peg the back directly into the ground and the front a little bit higher but still pitched down.
Then build a long fire from edge to edge in front of tarp and feel toasty :-)
