I was fishing Valley Creek outside of Philadelphia. It produces beautiful wild browns...even in the middle of August.

How do you tell if you have a bite if you can't see the fish take it? Trout take flies so subtly, so I don't have a clue unless I actually see it happen

A lot of fly fisherman use strike indicators. Neon yarn tied around the line, or a tiny bobber are popular choices.

I started up fishing again this year, I don't have a car so it's been kind of hard to find time, but i a few days last week in a boat crabbing and stocking up on perch in the chesapeake bay.

Only two somewhat decent local fishing spots, Lake Artemesia and Greenbelt Lake. Artemesia looks nice, but you need a bike to cover any sort of ground cause they don't allow boating. And Greenbelt lake is weedy as fuck, i didn't have any decent weedless rigs today so I plan on going back on wednesday with a plan. Maybe slip bobber some minnows for crappie, i caught a bunch on tube lures from a boat last year, but i can never find them from shore.

I really want to catch bass though, i try to look up weed fishing tips, but i don't think it was meant for a place with weeds THIS bad. They go all the way to the top, the entire manmade lake is shallow as hell.

you want to cast into structure like fallen trees and weeds near shore, but it's difficult if not impossible in many cases to do that while you are on the shore. i tried bass fishing from shore myself and had zero success. i've seen multiple people try it at the various local lakes i fish at and they always stand like dumbasses by the shore with nothing to show for it.

I know about all that, there's a lot of good logs and lilypads around. A guy caught a 4-pounder yesterday with a weedless frog lure, I have the same exact one but my rod is ul so i was afraid to use it.

I have a boat i could bring in, but the place doesn't allow a motor and it isn't really a good rowing boat.

I love those kinds of lakes. No jackasses tearing around with their jetskis or their tubing, easy to canoe through, and often, tend to be better than average gamefish lakes because they have low fishing pressure.

It's a great lake for boating. Due to the entire shore being covered in heavy weeds, it's hard for people to fish out the good fish.

The crappie are freaking massive and ridiculously aggressive. Though they didn't seem to care much for worms, they attacked tube lures as soon as they hit the water.

But a boat is a huge pain to get in there, parking is all really far and there's a huge hill. We use an inflatable intex mariner in there, but it's a pain to row so I'm thinking of getting an inflatable or otherwise light kayak.

Lake Artemesia would be amazing if they let you boat in there.

Yup, just waiting for the salmon to stage for their run, follow that up with big lake run browns and then the mighty steelhead season.

No fly fishing this summer save for a few nice brook trout I took on a canoe trip. Here's a nice steelhead me and a bud caught while downrigging a few days ago. Derby scale said 6 pounds.

I just got home from a weekend fishing trip to Sweden, got to test out a new rod but only caught a single perch, any way, while I was standing there throwing my line I noticed this little bobber washed up on the bank, I've never seen anything like it, it has only one tie point, a glow stick and two orange balls, don't know the brand either, does anyone know what this thing is? ( besides a bobber obviously)

Its a rod alarm, you usually place it on the rod tip at night carp/catfish fishing so you actually know when you get a bite.

I like to tie flies. Or at least did. I have tons of materials in a big ol' toolbox in my closet. Got busy with other things in life and kinda forgot about it.
I pretty much just go trout fishing with the kids these days. White rooster tail is my best performer.

This is an incredibly hard thing, which I've only heard of being done. I'm planning a holiday again to do this this year. It'll be three weeks, in the summer spent in a tidal lagoon on the coast of South Africa.

I have a suitable rod, I can double-haul correctly, but I've had no luck with even a variety of flies and locations.

Any tips?

Ike fishing a spot exactly like you described. Wakebaits and light weight carolina rigs also work well.

Honestly you should be able to fish that with a spinnerbait as well.

sup guys, don't fly fish and don't plan to because of money, but I do fish, mostly saltwater because San Diego is the place for saltwater on the west coast. And because I am a shit for bass on freshwater, and I fucking hate bait fishing for trout in the winter.

Pic related, caught this last saturday, my first yellowtail ever, 38" and somewhere along the lines of 20-25lbs.

Gave me a great 20-25 minute fight on 20# tackle. Now Im hooked on catching more of this, too bad I don't have the money to go out on 2 day trips.

Sorry, it was about pitch black and I didn't even look at the pic before posting. 14" fatty on a ribbed worm. Light pink, flecked with the fluorescent yellow tail if you can't make it out. Caught all my fish on that same worm today, it did great in overcast and dusk light.

im from nj and can definitely vouch for valley creek. great river, super clear cold waters year round, the only problem is its so clear the fish are spooky as shit, and when your a sloppy caster like me, they head for the hills.
