The lure in the photo is a Rapala Husky Jerk (HJ10) in Glass Perch colour. I've been told that it works well in Lake Ontario because of our yellow perch population that pike love to eat.

Obviously I couldn't include photos of every single lure I threw but it included a Rapala Husky Jerk (HJ12) in FireTiger, Little Cleo blue and chrome 1/4oz spoon, Little Cleo red and gold 2/5oz spoon, Rebel Super Pop-R, Yo-Zuri 3DS Minnow 70 SP in 1/4oz, Rapala Ultralight Minnow 06 in silver, and a chartreuse curly tail grub on a black and yellow 1/4oz jighead.

Every time I get up early, get the boat prepped and loaded and swing by to pick him up I'm waiting 20 minutes cause he can't shit and start shooting Jack until I'm waiting outside or something apparently. He also can't fish worth a shit, loses all my tackle he touches and streams fm radio stations that are 90% commercials at inappropriate volumes.

For a top of the line luxurious baitcaster, get the Shimano 19 Antares. The Daiwa Steez CT SV is also a nice option but it has aluminum gears compared to the brass micro-module gears of the Antares which will last forever. The Steez CT SV is lighter though.
If you want a spinning reel, get a Stella 2500 or 3000.

I'm aware that Lake Ontario sucks and that fishing around the GTA sucks big time too. Unfortunately I live downtown in a city near the shores of Lake Ontario and don't get to go up north to fish those better lakes often. I definitely won't be eating the pike I catch.

Not remotely true but it depends on your target(s), rod (balance), and line need(obviously a 5k is going to hold more line to run than a 3k)

I use a 3k on a 7' rod for salt all the time and have never been spooled. Shore, inshore, yak, & boat.
I also have reels up to 6k and rods to 12'

I have a friend whos had a lot of success with the sougayilang reels. QC isnt always there and i saw one that the handle broke on day one. But he bought i think 12 reels and the rest handled the fall striped bass in the Chesapeake pretty well.

Man, so I just recently picked up fishing (I used to go back when I lived at home with my dad a lot, but haven't gotten into it since moving out) and I never realized how addicting this is.

When I was a kid, it was just .. fishing. It was enjoyable, spent some time with my dad, caught some / lost whatever but now that I'm older and doing this myself it's different. I'm much more in tune with what I'm doing.. setting different rigs up, different lures, tackle..etc.. and man this shit wonderful.

more expensive rods actually tend to be easier to break because of the carbon, which makes the rod much lighter and more sensitive. it sounds like you want a fiberglass rod though

That's why you limit yourself to one of each type. maybe two sizes each also depending on what size fish you are targeting. the softbaits are pretty cheap for what you get, but they get damaged beyond repair eventually, hardbaits are expensive, but they last forever... until you snag them and lost them. lol. funny thing is, I never get anything on my crankbaits and other "bling" $5+ a pop toys... they bite the various good old rubber worms though.

For those kinds of rod you'd be better off buying JDM. All my ultralight stuff is JDM because they know how to make quality ultralight gear.
Look at MajorCraft's pack rods, you can find them in some US retailers and they usually come with a nice carrying case as well.

Finally caught my first northern pike today after more than a week of trying.
Tried out a new spot this evening on Lake Ontario. Got there and started throwing a silver and blue Little Cleo, followed by a Yo-Zuri 3DS Minnow in Mullet. Finally went back to the Husky Jerk (HJ10) in Glass Perch and caught the pike unexpectedly. Ditched the wire leader and tied straight to 12lb Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon, guess I got lucky and wasn't cut off.

On a related note, my Yo-Zuri lures cast so much better than any of my Rapalas which tend to tumble in the air. Was surprised I could consistently cast that 1/4oz 3DS Minnow like a bullet.

Hey gents. My father used to take us out fishing years ago. It was fun but honestly I've never caught anything. Starting thinking about it again recently. I am under the impression that using a line with too high a breaking strength is considered unsporting but I don't know where I got the idea from. All that said, what do you all consider "too much" line when fishing? I get that it depends on the weight and the fight of the fish but is there a general guideline?

it just depends on what kind of fish you are going to potentially encounter. it's about being responsible, and it goes both ways. too weak of line and you risk losing tackle and leaving fish with lures/hooks in their mouth, potentially making it hard for them to feed or thrive. too strong of line and you have negative performance, and if you do have to cut the line, you are leaving a hefty environmental hazard out there. like someone else already said, you would be surprised what even a 6lb line can take. i frequently catch small bass on 4lb line easily, but wouldn't ever go to 2lb because it feels exponentially weaker than 4lb. just learn to use your drag instead of manhandling fish, and remember some species fight more than others. i'd say for a beginner, as long as you don't go under 6lb test you can't really screw up on typical pond fish(panfish and bass.)

I think overall the top 2 here are the ones that's caught me most perch over the years, only recently tried getting some more "advanced" lures, like swimbaits and wobblers, but the Rapala has been killing it at my local water

But a yea small-ish spinners and spoons are the way to go

The last day of a 3 day marathon salt water excursion. Fished all day and partied all night on repeat. It was amazing. On the last day I was beat to hell. Working on 5-6 hours of sleep in the 72. I flipped the bail open on a Newell reel to drop my line. as I flipped the bail, my fingers just... Let loose. I dropped the rod right overboard. Custom rod, Newell reel. I panicked. My feet were on the rail to go in after it. I was pulled back. The captain marked the spot where the rod went in. Since the bail was open, tons of line was out in the water. A guy on the other side snagged my line and we pulled and pulled hoping that the end of the line was secured to the bail. It was! We got the rod and reel back from 65ft. I was done for the rest of that day.

I just rebuilt an old Abu Garcia rod. I don't know muh about the rod since the markings were mostly rubbed off. I can only make out that it was an abu Garcia classic. I wrapped all new eyes on it with red thread and I did a spiral wrap so the eyes on the baitcaster wrap around to the bottom of the rod. I then put an abu black Maxx on it. It's nice.

I guess my point was that 2 person kayaks don't handle well and to me are not worth the effort to work on them that way. Your project looks cool and definitely something I would do... It's just that for nearly the same amount of $ you can get an aluminum boat and it will just take whatever you want to put on it. If you're going to mount a trolling motor, might as well go balls to the wall and throw on like a Johnson 9.9 and fly across the water.

Depends on where you are but it's best around Fall. Get a longer inshore rod like a 7'6 or an 8' and throw light metal lures wherever you see birds from the beach. This rule also applies for Spanish mackerel in the summer

Well, really, it does not offer much of a benefit for freshwater fishing. It does stop strain on the wrist when fighting a fish. Traditionally, the rod will buck to one side or another and you fight the rod and the fish. This will stop that which is why you mostly only see spiral on saltwater rods. My reasoning is that it looks cool and is rather unique for freshwater rods. It does not really affect the castibility or action of the rod other than I can use less guides running up after the twist.

Not exactly true. Depends on the species. For your flatheads and channel cats, locally sourced cut bait is best. So for me, it's cut up bluegill, suckers, or carp. I've also had a lot of success on beef and chicken livers.
For blue cats, you want to run large live baits such as bluegill, Creek chubs, shad, etc.
I've never heard of using shrimp as bait for freshwater. It's just not a natural food for them.

by manual pickup I assume you mean bail-less. I don't think that is the issue. I think your problem is you are underspooled on line and probably have something snagging. A mono/flouro leader may help if you're not using. I've had $30+ lures sail on the first cast before and it sucks.

I was having trouble positioning my hand to release the line in such a way that it didn't catch on the roller. I found that the roller assembly was rotating mid cast and it was catching the line and moving my hand further up the grip was pretty inconvenient for every cast.

Guys I'm absolutely shit at fishing. My old man hated the outdoors so I was only able to get into it when I turned 18, I'm 23 now and sort of gave up because I couldn't catch shit in a natural body of water...only community ponds so this discouraged me. I've seen a design vaguely similar to this a long time ago with a sharpening stone in the side of the handle but the handle was a 2 piece that came apart easily and you could sharpen the blade just holding the bare shank and put it back together, probably what they've got going on here

I feel you, really the main reason I went this route was that the kayak was free (father in kaw passed away and left it) I already had the pvc and 2x4, and the 30lbs thrust Minn kota was only $95 + my friend used his military discount for 10% off. So really, I got my self on the water for about $100.

Wife just told me to get another rod&reel for the vacation were taking with her parents in case they want to fish with us. I mostly do salt water (and this will be salt water fishing as well) and have two medium-heavy rods and two 5000 reels. Different brands for everything though. Tranx 200 is the best small saltwater baitcaster you can get. I use one for shore and bay kayak fishing.
Though slx is a good cheap option that is okay for saltwater as well

Tranx is too big as an all rounder if you want to cross over between reds and specks.
Which I think you should considering your other rods are quite heavy.
Go for either a Calcutta B 100 if you like round, or a curado DC 150 which is what I use.
If you just want to wrestle redfish Tranx or Lexa HD are king

For rods St. Croix Tidemaster 7' medium is so good. Landed a 43 pound giant trevally on one.

Thanks. I got me a TranX200 and a medium 7' rod.

When I get these medium heavys, I was just told they were the best all around (I could go reds and specks on it) and to get any 4000-5000 saltwater spinner so I did. What's with the smaller / lighter setups for specks? Why would so many guides and shit recommend getting this heavier stuff?

Sorry for the questions. First time getting into fishing really on my own and no just using other people's gear.

Guides recomend heavier stuff because they use heavier than nescessary gear because they want to ensure their clients land as much as possible.
It's just not as fun.

I guide Giant Trevally fishing in Kenya during the winter and the rods I give my clients are 100 pount xx Heavy setups, when I fish on my own I use a 65 pound medium heavy.
For your personal stuff I always recomend going as light as you can.

Guides also most likely have you soak bait rather than lures so it’s usually heavier gear as well. Lure fishing past size 4000 spinning reel is tiring for a beginner

How positive are you about the catfish? Catfish are notoriously hard to keep sustained in ponds because they're picky about their spawning environment. Usually you have to go to lengths to provide spawning habitats such as barrels with holes cut in them and even then, they're territorial and only one fish will get to spawn per environment, then the young catfish have to try and survive being eaten by predatory fish like bass also present in the pond until they grow to a safe size

Alright, catching one is definite proof. They can live a good 10-15 years. Ive observed situations where someone swears a pond has catfish because he caught them all the time as a teenager but now XX years later we cant catch any despite a dozen rods with various cut/live/dead/stinky baits on them cast out and waiting

On that note, reminds me of a time I came back from a trip offshore and accidentally brought some pinfish back to the house, Alive. Chucked them into the backyard pond thinking the big boys would take care of them.
Years later I was cleaning the pond and saw some fish I had never seen before chilling there. The fucking pinfish had survived an instantaneous freshwater transfer and lived for years until hurricane Irma killed them.

You might also consider using a heavier braid line (15lb or so) with a 4 or 6lb monofiliment or fluorocarbon leader... Learn to tie an FG knot from YouTube. It's been working well for me for bass and trout.
