What are your secret catfish baits /out? I have catfish behind my house and I want to catch my catfish on a hook and line and then let them go. What can they not resist?

For channel cats?

Best luck I ever had was with the super sticky dip bait and pic related tied on. Get those rigs and coat the hell out of them with the dip bait and send it. Worked way better than chicken livers or the dough balls, but I can’t remember which brand bait we were using on the good run years ago.

I live on a “cove”, an area where water comes in from the river and then just kind of swirls around. Are there big catfish where there are small catfish or is it kind of a crapshoot? I’ve caught a few that are 4-5 pounds and a lot that are smaller.

The dip bait is like peanut butter in consistency, so I always take a stick and jam it in the end of the little plug and jam it in the jar a bunch of times. Sometimes they have a little sponge around the treble hook too. It gets filled with the sticky dip bait and coates with it so it slowly washes off a little bit as it’s in the water and the cats can smell-taste it.

Don’t get a jar of regular dough bait though, it needs to be the softer stuff like a sticky soft peanut butter.

Knew an old guy who used to take a few cans of sardines, smash em up, and put them into a small jar with water. He then used small foam that looked like mini marshmallows. He would squeeze the air out, dip em in the jar till they swole with the liquid. Claims they were the best bait he had ever tried. He would store them for months before using them. The smell was disturbingly memorable.

They'll eat anything. I've seen them eat mulberries. Most I ever caught on a line were with shad I caught the same day with a casting net.

Trot line is a different story. That's where weird stinky baits work because the scent can build up a long trail. Commercial stink baits, dough balls, cheese in pantyhose, soap, all that stuff works to some degree or other. I always caught bigger cats on a trot line.

Always use a treble hook with catfish.

Mudcats favor shallow water. Theones you usually catch are smaller, brown in color, and they don't taste as good. I have seen 100 pound specimens caught on trot line. Channel cats and blue cats prefer deep, flowing waters. Usually 5 to 10 pounds. They're white or blue in color and taste great.

There a youtube channel called "Catfish and Carp." This guy has his catfishing dialed in and you'll get better info there than you could on here.

A good rule of thumb is to use natural forage like shad or sunfish. I usually go bank sinker, bead, swivel, big circle hook, and a shad or worms. I have the best luck fishing the outside bends of rivers.

Something like your sticky fucking stinkbait and a catfish worm works fine for your smaller channels and whatnot. But if you want some of the big boys use a dead larger baitfish. A large shiner or shad.

You guys ever go 'noodling' for catfish? It doesn't have to be hook and line to catch them. My great uncle and I would rub peanut butter on our 'lures' and the stick them in the holes and see if anything came out. Then we would go fishing. Good times

A favorite tactic of mine is to get to the river an hour or two before sundown and setup a few bottom rigs with worms and small hooks to catch suckers and goldeye to use for cut bait. To catch eater size cats plus walleye and sauger I’ll use a chunk of sucker meat on a 2/0 hook. For bigger cats I might use half the sucker or goldeye on a 4/0 hook. It’s pretty deadly.

Cut up hot dogs and put them in a ziploc bag with koolaid, garlic powder, and salt. Shake it up a bit and let it settle over night. Jello mix works too, but usually I don't use jello mix and koolaid works just as good.
