Is astronomy /out/ approved?

I'm looking for some tips on how to navigate the night sky better. I thought it would be fairly easy to find stuff like the Ring Nebula in Lyra or the globular cluster in Hercules, but I see so many stars in my finder that I get confused.

I am using a map, of course. I have the pocket Sky Atlas which I had seen recommended often. I believe it goes up to magnitude 9 stars though fainter stars are visible in my area when using a scope. I'm laying out a few routes to attempt some star hopping tonight.

this is just dimmer than triangulum (+5.7), which you're lucky to see with averted gaze, and only if you know where to look. I've only ever noticed it when looking at my long exposure pics after getting back home. You're basically looking for pic related in this photo

how dark of skies are you at? a telescope is nice but if you're new you should start with the basics like the pleiades, andromeda, and the brighter messier objects

the other place to check is >>>/p/, they sometimes have astro threads with some folks who know what they're doing

It's a rural area. Probably about a 3-4 on the bortle scale, leaning toward 3 when conditions are really clear.

Pleiades are still rising too close to dawn, but they're pretty impressive even through a pair of binoculars.

Lots of success last night. I found the Ring Nebula, M13 and M92 with ease. I tried an app called Stellarium that helped a great deal. The moon light put a damper on finding things toward the south though.

My scope is a 12" dobsonian. I haven't tried any photography with it. Unfortunately I didn't foot the extra for the go to system so it's all manual making it difficult to do an long exposures.

This image was taken with a Hydrogen alpha filter. It only lets through a specific wavelength that ionized hydrogen emits. Without the filter the nebula was completely washed out due to light pollution in my area.

I was just thinking the other day I'd really like to get a telescope and see if this would be a viable hobby. I don't know where I stand on light pollution, but I'm pretty rural. Just have light pollution from little cities(about 60k pop) light pollution in the north east and south west of me. About 20 miles away.

Anyway, with a budget of ~$300... Can anyone recommend a good beginner telescope? I've shopped around and read into a lot but I don't feel like dropping $300 basing my shit off some top 10 list and other articles written by a vice reporter.

Pocket Sky Atlas is great, but I'd suggest also acquiring Turn Left at Orion. "star hopping" is the technique. My Zhumell Z8 has a somewhat large *optical* finder scope that makes it a lot easier, too. I also often just scan the skies with a wide field 2" eyepiece.

Zhumell Z8 is the finest beginner scope I know of. Comes with essentially everything needed right from the start, 2 eyepieces, large optical finder scope, mirror fan, laser collimator. It's well worth the extra just above that budget.

Suit yourself, but the small bucket isn't going to gather enough light to see very much so you'll be far less likely to be inspired to go further and it will require that much more investment if you do. I cut grass for a summer to get up what it took to get mine. The very least I'd suggest would be the 6" Orion. You should find the nearest astronomy group star party and go look through some scopes. Be sure to read their rules before going.

I did months of research on Cloudy Nights before buying mine. I originally wanted an Orion because I'd grown up with their ads and catalogs as a kid in the 80s reading space and science mags. You'll wind up pretty much immediately having to invest in those "extras" anyway. The only extras I've bought since that scope are a variable lens and accessory bag. Without the mirror fan you'll constantly be fogged out as the temps cool by the minute and it condenses. Without the collimator your mirrors won't be accurately aligned. Without the 2" wide field you'll be missing out on what's actually overall the more spectacular viewing window by far.

Fair enough. Unfortunately from what I can find all the Zhumell's are on back order as well. I'll probably just join the wait list and see. After doing more research, I'm also surprised Orion wouldn't ship a collimator with a beginner scope, or wouldn't at least say it's needed. Can you align your mirrors without one or does it just make the process significantly easier?

I think the Orions come with a lens cap that has a hole in it so you can use the eyeball circle within circle alignment method. With the laser you just put a circular donut sticker in the center of your primary mirror, put the laser into the eyepiece hole, then adjust the mirrors until the laser comes back through the collimator into the center of its target.

Also I think the circle in circle method will get you more "close enough" that relatively precise (even the laser method is somewhat a case of "close enough", but less so).

Looks like the Orions have a donut sticker already in the center, which is a little nice I suppose. But the lack of a fan is concerning if it's going to fog out bad. The temperatures here are relatively stable in the late summer.

I am like you and remember all the Orion ads and catalogs so I'm a little biased. Since everythings on back order I still have a couple weeks to research at least. Is the Starry Nights software worth a damn?

Nah, the mirror *will* fog. As the temps drop at night it condenses on the mirror because the temp in the tube takes longer to catch up, and it doesn't take drastic drops, and it doesn't take long. Just run the fan and it won't happen.

Oh, I don't know about the SN software, I just use Stellarium and an Android app if anything, but by far mostly just the sky atlas. Once you start finding them and learn the sky you can just find shit without aid and trip people out showing them ring nebula, orion, Andromeda, M13, just pointing and slightly scanning. The large optical finder should also not be underestimated in useful value.

Most galaxies are essentially smudges of light. You won't see detailed colored swirls with your eye. The photos you see are taken by stacking, where the telescope tracks the object while taking many photos and stacking them together to bring in all that detail. The human eye simply isn't sensitive enough on its own. About the only color you'll see with eye through scope are Jupiter's bands and a faint greenish hue to Orion's nebula.

Could you explain this in more detail? It sounds like a phenomenon I have experienced intuitively - with my bare eyes, when looking straight at a star or other object I can barely see it but when I look beside it, it becomes much clearer. Is that what it refers to? Any idea why it works like that?

I tried googling for “astronomy averted gaze” but it mostly returns psychology articles about social interactions...

Not them but it's where you sort of look around the field of view and not directly at the primary object. I see M13 just fine with my eye and averted gaze though, and several globulars in Sagittarius.

Definitely keep in mind that astrophotography doesn't require as large of a scope, but does require far more investment. You won't see as much detail with direct eye observation, but it's tough to beat the meditative state spending hours seeing whatever you can of any of these things after reading about what they actually are and such.

Great thread, I am a beginning photographer of the night sky and was wondering if you could help with some issues. Pic related was taken during the last new moon with a Sony RX-100 and 3200 ISO at 15 seconds exposure. This is the resized RAW file. While not able to assist as I have never taken the astrophotography route (primarily due to budget over decades), I still find that photo to be incredible in and of itself despite flaws and without comparisons. It's very thrilling to imagine being enabled to explore that hobby/art/science. I especially enjoy the astrophotos that aren't just patch of sky with no visible Earth elements. I would particularly enjoy doing them on objects seen through small openings through the forest canopy.

I just learned bit by bit. Can't point to an exact guide, just read here and there on the web. I started out with a cheap beginners scope and did visual observing and learned the basics before I got into astrophotography.

Laser collimaters make it fantastically easy to do. I'd highly recommend getting one. I'd also recommend adding a telerad to help you aim with an unmagnified view so you don't run into the same problem OP did. Before it gets dark you want to make sure your mirrors are collimated and your finder scope and telrad are aligned.

The Cloudy Nights forum is a great resource for beginners and people already in the hobby. If you're coming in with zero experience, I'd definitely recommend downloading stellarium and getting a decent pair of binoculars. Check out the moon and the planets. Learn the constellations. A lot of people want to jump straight into astrophotography but it's expensive. See how much you enjoy the night sky before going overboard.

Thanks for the resources, lads. It's wild that I live in a relatively "rural" area and even finding a Bortle 3 is a challenge. I miss my time in Central Asia in areas that were all 1-2.

Fortunately where I live I'm in a 3. The nearest class 2 is Mark Twain National Forest and it'd be difficult to set up there.

Being in a 3 isn't terrible. I'm building an observatory on my roof this autumn, it's 60 feet up and will will be so comfy. Have half the materials ordered. I'm going to model it slightly off the Majora's Mask observatory.
