what video games does /out/ play when theyre not out? since its summer i spend more time inside because i hate the heat. ive been playing the long dark and wonder if theres any similar comfy outdoor games like it.

Cataclysm dda, a free turn based survival game with an unending procedurally generated map and fantastic crafting system. Can be played with undead/post apocalyptic enemies or just try not to freeze in a rural/wilderness map without enemies.

This. The singleplayer is almost an /out/ immersive sim, it's extremely comfy and has a ton of pro-environmental themes in it. Rockstar may be shitty multiplayer devs but the singleplayer of RDR2 is a gem. I don't give a damn about or play most AAA games, but it was worth every bit I spent on it.

I don't really game at all but sometimes I do play the old 2012 Slender game. It still spoops me out and the weird thing is it's exactly like the woods I grew up in, the evil tree, the rock formation, even the fucking silo (legit a 140yr old hollowed-out rusted iron beast still standing in the middle of the woods from a farm long gone). Even the trucks parked out in the woods are just like the trucks we used to fuck around with at night when there was construction happening on the other side of the forest in the early 2000s. I love spooky shit and horror, but I also love nostalgia and that game does it all for me.

I’m Australian and plan on moving to America. Australia has its nice spots but I’m definitely more of a mountains, glaciers, lakes and spruce forests type of guy

As a duel Ausfag/Amerifat I'm gonna have to go with North America as better /out/. Australia has a ton of amazing places and open land for days and lots of national parks in different climates/geological locations, but in terms of sheer variety it just doesn't hold a candle to NA. It's also true that all but the most popular and urban-accessible /out/ is pretty much empty all the time in Australia, but for the most part that's true in the US as well. Spend 6 weeks driving across the US and you'll be able to see 20x more ecology and geology than Australia has to offer. If you plan your trip right you can see more variety in a single day or two roadtrip than Australia has to offer, †bqh

While I agree that the US is more diverse, I love how remote our national parks feel. Living in Sydney, I can drive for one or two hours in any direction (or get the train) and end up in the middle of relatively untouched bushland. There are areas of the blue mountains where you can walk for days or even weeks without seeing a soul. I'd wager that the more remote parts of Wollemi and the southern Blueys haven't been properly visited in years, and these are less than 100km outside of sydney.

Tassie and the aussie alps are great wilderness areas too. Though of course, alaska takes the cake here.
I'd say we've got the euros beat though, especially on camping laws.

And for fucking once the Farcry crafting system makes plausible sense, I mean, if I needed say more mag pouches, I just can't see how I need specifically tibetan five legged yak fur instead of you know, synthetic cordura, but stone age and a bigger resource bag which has to be made from tapir skin? Sure, why not, I'm not an expert but I'd guess there were some preferences on what skins are used for what.

I agree that Straya has amazing /out/, and it's particularly unique in how much of it is actually untouched, mostly because of lack of access, Aboriginal jurisdictions, and such low population density. But America is much more untouched than people think, the easy to access places might be more trodden but the hard to access places (backcountry National Parks and similar) are out of this world. That said I live in Australia now and I fucking love everything on offer here, but I can't help but miss the crazy shit in the USA; Grand and Bryce Canyons, the Redwood Forests, the White Mountains and Sierra Nevadas, hell even Death Valley. The USA /out/ is just a lot more awe-inspiring by chance of geology, and has a lot more mammalian wildlife to fuck your shit up as well

Unironically Minecraft and stardew valley. Also, Pokémon. Travelling with a small companion across tons of regions and land is incredibly comfy and relaxing for me

Do not play the mission where you rustle the sheep. Stop playing story missions right there and just go out and explore. Everything gets gay and shitty after that. If you want to explore the whole map, keep a saveslot from before that mission.

#1 recommendation is modded Skyrim, you can do this on PS4 and Xbox too, and easily without having to learn too much
other recommendations I'd say Minecraft if you're easily amused
Terraria if you like the idea of 2D Minecraft
RDR2 Is good if you like GTA
any FarCry or JustCause title is good if you like action
the new Tomb Raider series has some survival mechanics and a great story
Horizon Zero Dawn is awesome if you have PS4
the Witcher 3 is a lot like Skyrim but different
many of the Assassin's Creed games have amazing outdoor landscapes
the Shadow of Mordor games are phenomenal if you like LOTR

Also there's an app called Sky: Children of the Light
It's free to play, multiplayer, and involves 3D platforming and flying. It's impressive for a mobile game, and controls are very simple.

Is it any good? I've been debating paying for xbox live since I also play Forza and that translates well to on-line play. I prefer single player as a rule.
