Does anyone know where you can get free nautical charts to practice navigation etc?

I really don't want to wait 6 to 8 weeks for a $40 map to arrive that i am just going to make mistakes all over anyway.

I will second this request. that and up to date topographical maps....specifically in canada....for reasons.

Which charts are you talking about?
If it's about the basic "height" (angle) of the sun over time, you can calculate them yourself as long as you can use a basic spreadsheet, or do it online here:

For navigation with moon or stars, I can't help. But the algorithms are the same, so for practice, using just the sun should be enough.

He means literal charts of bodies of water put out by NOAA. It's what navigators on ships used before computer systems. I was in the Navy and navigation was my favorite part. We honestly only ever used gps but your trained to be able to use a chart with pencil and compass. Super fun skill to have. Having your watch team use visual aids to navigation to give you your exact coordinates when pulling into port. I knew a guy whose captain was old school and for non-mission critical transists, I'm talking crossing the Pacific would have his crew only navigate by the stars. Pretty incredible and based.

If you are worried about wrecking a chart with writing. Laminate them and use a dry erase marker. You can even do it yourself. I forget what it’s called but it’s used to line cupboards and drawers. Get some clear stuff and you are in business. You can only do one side if you want.
