I've been seriously looking into this for a while now and I'd like any advice.

Basic considerations and common solutions:

Rain collection and storage
Drill well (expensive)

None
Cell signal booster

Reduce, reuse, recycle
Haul it out
Burn it

Solar
Hydro
Backup petrol generator

How far is it from town?
What neighbors it? (fed govt, timber company)

Park a trailer while you build? Rent in town/stay where you are until build finished?

Any idea how to handle the financials?

I see the only barrier to this kind of lifestyle being the cost of buying land and building a house, and of course sustaining the arrangement.

Should I look for a career that would be useful in a rural area? Should I find a job that lets me work remotely? Should I just save enough to live off my savings?

I feel like I'm stuck in the money machine lads. help

I think there's too many gimmicks and lifestyle bloggers about this, and the real answer is to just commute to a traditional job.
The future of WFH just looks better and better post-covid and with the increase in technology. Think about homesteaders 40 years ago compared to today, it's so much easier now.

That's only fair, but how can you expect to do all the work required in a homestead if you spend so much time commuting? It kind of feels like you're even more married to technology since you're spending so much time driving in your car to wherever you're working. To me there's nothing simple about that life.

A remote job would be much easier to work around I think. Most people just dick around half the time at their white collar gigs anyway.

That's irrational. Technology is a good thing, I just want to have more control and insulate myself from modern problems.

Specialization of labor is the proven model for success. I can work as a banker in town and trade my wealth for raw milk that the dairy farmer can produce in bulk.

When you jump to water, internet, solar, and housing, you're putting the cart before the horse. All of these are far down the list of priorities.

The first thing you want to focus on is saving, investments, and passive income streams. Once you've got a couple thousand coming in each month and a sizable nest egg, then you can start thinking about looking at things like land and shelter.

This is not possible for the average person. It would take a person who makes 50k a year at least 13 years to even come close to that. And I used a really slim budget to calculate that. 13 yrs of nothing but work and no life and no unexpected large expenses, no kids, nada.

The truth is, our current system does everything in its power to keep people from living like this. How many states is it illegal to not be hooked to electric/water/waste water grid? You can't even escape property tax(inb4 schizo sovereign citizens with their crazy fucking ideas that get you audited and put in prison).

$1000 a month would be plenty if all your expenses are just food, property tax, and an LTE bill
You can buy a decent rural parcel of like 5 acres or more depending on where for like 10000
In a forested area you can clear some trees and build a cabin with them, the majority of it is free, you just need to buy the tools, roofing, windows, door, furnishing

But yeah, unless you can commute to a job, passive income or remote work are your main options, or you could go full dick proenekke in Alaska, but even then you need a decent nest egg

Well then, even a thousand a month would be ok. But after taxes, remember you're looking at less than that which is why I rounded up.

But arguing over exact amounts is just nit-picking. My point was that your financials are priority #1 whether you go off grid or not.

I'm shopping for land now, just sold my house, not larping. One big discovery I've made is that "no building codes" is a myth when it comes to legal sewage disposal for a residence.

It's killed my dream of a Ted shack.

I just want a max of 3-4 acres, off grid, the furthest away from people. I've been looking, is it wise to ask people who are selling these 50+ acres and just ask them if they'd sell me 4 acres off of the side of it, or would I get laughed at?

Some pricing is absurd and some are very reasonable but have massive plots of land that isn't worth it.
