Hey guys I'm an aspiring /out/doorsman and im trying to get more into camping and backpacking but im having trouble finding out where good spots are. Is going to a state park and waltzing around until you find a spot a good/semi legal idea?

Depends entirely on where you are going. BLM land for the most part, yes. NPS etc. can have some stricter rules and need permits etc.

First thing you want to do is look up where you want to go and get a physical map for it. Since you are new, you should stick to major trails with clear sources of water and camping areas picked out. Depending on the place, you might need a backcountry permit and a fire permit. Good luck anon!

I should emphasize, ALWAYS have a physical map, and learn how to read it. Learn about terrain features, elevation maps etc. Learn how to find north as well. The book 'Freedom of the Hills' will teach you the basics in backcountry traveling and mountaineering. It is a must read.

if it's legal and allowed in that state park then yes. Otherwise try state/national forests

if you're new hike on an established trail with marked campsites. Not the ones where you need to book ahead (like in a national park), but trails where people have marked out firepits or shelters

just put on your boots and go outside, there's nothing special about it, even a 5 year old can do that

go on alltrails and sort for longer than 20 miles. then make sure you're allowed to backcountry camp there, otherwise get read for stealth campin

Charge it off a battery pack, or if broken, turn around an head back the way I came, or most likely just finish my hike and walk back without any navigational aids. It’s not the 1700s anymore where we have thousands and thousands of untracked miles.
