My trusty Megamid is no more, and I need a replacement. I'm considering the MegaLight or Mountain Laurel Supermid. Any one have any experience with either of these? Does anyone know how they compare to the Megamid? I'm also considering the hubba hubba (or whatever its called) because a freestanding tent does have its advantages.

Any other recommendations also appreciated, so I guess tent general.

Sorry mate, I don't know the super mid or any other mld pyramid. friend of mine has the trailstar and I'm always surprised what kind of a fortress this little tarp is.

I've got an MLD duomid, and it's very good quality. I've never used one of the Black Diamond shelters, but from what I've seen, they're fine. MLD has excellent quality of build, though. I've had this thing in gale-force winds with no issues.

I have owned an MSR Hubba (sold it), and my brother owns an MSR Hubba Hubba. They're excellent tents, but here you're talking about a fully enclosed shelter. The Hubba Hubba is narrow for two people + gear, and the Hubba is just narrow. I'll take a pyramid tarp over a double-wall tent any day. Much more useable floorspace for the weight.

I have a GoLite ShangriLa .. 3 person I believe. I haven't been able to use it, and unfortunately the thing is yellow. I'd love for it to be brown or green like the one in your pic.

Last I checked they are way on backorder/not making them anymore - perhaps working on an updated model?

At any rate I'd like to get out with it. I bought it for the purposes of rigging a small portable DIY woodstove into the thing.

I have a hubba hubba. At 6"2 it's got plenty of space for me and my stuff. If you're planning on using it as a base for more than a couple of nights, it's worth getting the larger gear shed vestibule. Makes getting in/out WAY easier.

Don't cheap out on materials quality for your final product. Good thread + good fabric + careful sealing = dry sleeping. If you're new to sewing, get some cheaper fabric with a similar weight/texture and practice a few times with that making simple gear (stuff sacks, tote bags, etc.) then move into the more complex stuff. A tarp is pretty basic, a jacket a bit more advanced. Once you get the hang of different materials and how to cut/sew them, the world is really your oyster. You'll start going to gear stores just to get ideas for your next project.
