Is the story about not bringing metal objects in the mountains true (because it would attract lightning strikes) or is it a urban myth?

What are the precautions you should take regarding lightning strikes when hiking or camping in the mountains?
Also does it change with different altitudes?

Unless you bring an entire utility pole with you, I dont think it will have an effect on lightning.

lighting will always strike nearest thing to the ground, if you have trees nearby it will always strike them. metal has effect if its high up in the air and im pretty sure you dont carry utility pole with you as anon above described
i dont think altitude has any effect on it but
dont quote me on that

Pretty much Every high mountain hiker who goes semi regularly has poles. Just don’t stick them up in the clouds when it’s looking like a thunderstorm

it's not even an urban myth. Nobody believes that bringing metal objects into the mountains will cause you to be struck by lightning

If there's a thunderstorm, don't stand out in the middle of an open area waving your tentpole as high in the air as you can
does it change with different altitudes?
Only to the extent that thunderstorms and weather systems are affected by tall things like mountains. Altitude has no effect on electrical conductivity
