How do I start mountaineering ? I have no fucking clue as to how any of this shit works and only have friends that might go hiking with me but none I would really ask for some serious montaineering. So the question is how does one get started ?

Do I just have to be a Chad and drive up to a random mountain in my area in sneakers and shorts and get to the top ? Should I even do it alone if I have no idea wtf I am doing ? I live in bavaria (germany, near austria) if that matters.

if you live in bavaria surely there are mountaineer clubs or the like. at the very least there will be some orgs running mountaineering classes, thats the way to go.
also dont get into this if you arent willing to drop a ton of money on gear. mountaineering is pretty much all gear, and its all expensive.

Depends what you’re starting from. Do you have any cold weather gear? Mountaineering is like anything, there’s always some new and better gear to try. It’s pretty fun though so don’t let the money discourage you. It’s a progression - you’re not going to be climbing Denali on your first trip out, so it’s not like you need to blow a ton of money at once. Start with some boots, crampons and a mountaineering axe and go from there.

The absolute very first thing to do is read freedom of the hills and make sure you know every bit of information in that book by heart. Then just go try and apply and practice those lessons on small, then increasingly larger mountains.

Not op but I started reading it and for the first 80 or so pages it all seemed like basic bitch information. I need to pick it up again to see if it gets better. I'm ot a mountaineer though but felt it would be a nice way to acquire more general /out/ knowledge.

Kek. My first ascent. I just walked up a mountain in altras and when the trail stopped I just scrambled and then it was just snow and ice and I continued but constantly slipped but I found a ridge of rocks following the path up so I scrambled further. Then I slipped and slipped and basically hopped up and up (the deep snow let me have some traction). Couldn’t feel my toes. Then I got to the summit. I was crawling to the top. It was like 6pm when I got up there so I had to come down and the gigantic slope down was like 70 degrees. I basically kept sliding and flew and flew and almost wiped off the side of the mountain. Eventually I got to a more solid ice level. It was dark by then and I couldn’t see shit. The moon was out though and my footsteps were illuminated. They looked sort of like glowing in the light fluorescent like. I followed those back to my tent. My tent was strewn with the wind and barely there/ I put it all back together and then huddled in my sleeping bag. Toes were getting purple since my trail runners were soaked. Ah. I should make a video explaining that first climb.

Move out west if you are in the US. Search local hiking groups on social media in that area and start regularly joining hikes. Trail runners and actual climbers are going to be doing more difficult objectives, but also more likely to be in better shape than you. Spend a year getting in shape and meeting people in the community. Build up gear over that year asking for advice along the way. Learn how to camp for multiple nights in a variety of weather conditions. This would be the best place to start probably.

If you're really entirely new to this, I would just try and go up smaller mountains first and get your own experience that way. From that point you can slowly walk your way up towards higher mountains and you'll notice when certain gear isn't good enough anymore for you. Also joining a Verein is a nice way to find people who think alike and get important knowledge quickly. They'll probably know way more than some bumfucks on vietnamese pencil porn sharing sites.

it's a rich man only hobby.
at best, if you live in Colorado or something you could probably day hike a couple of 14'ers or something but anything more than that you'll need to be prepared to drop $20k or more in equipment, gear, training, sherpas, etc etc etc.

Maybe for major peak bagging. Here in the alps, second hand gear and some other important gear purchases, I can solo trek most things and my whole kit is about 1k usd. Granted the alps are not the Himalayas, but I can get some fun winter backcountry treks.

Top three most expensive things will be

>tent
Lightweight and 4 season is good. Can get quite pricey.
>boots
Feet staying warm and dry is extremely important in high alpine environments
>hard outer shell
A good one is pricey.

Go second hand if you are a broke bitch. Hell, my first 4 season tent weighed like 8kg and I hauled that fucker everywhere. It builds character.

Is major peak bagging a rich mans game? Yes. But you can definitely have fun for cheap(er) if you live near an alpine environment.
