I only enjoy solo hiking and camping. People think I’m strange because I like going into the mountains by myself. Anyone else like this?

you can get tuna in a small pouches too, theyre easier to pack and take less room when empty
you can also dry some ground meat and buy a pack of some dry stew whatever that is in english instead of mre
im finnish so i dont carry a gun, camera i have on my phone if needed

i dont know what roan mountain is but i hope you have a great time and get lots of nice pictures

You need some friends that are comfortable just soaking in the surroundings. Sharing silence with someone can be really nice. Perhaps some ground rules not to talk about things outside the tirp while you're on it. Nothing wrong with going out to hike solo though, peace and quiet can be nice.

i feel that bro. Personally, I'm fortunate enough to have people in my life who can just be out in the wilderness without constantly reminding me of all the things i left behind. If youre after solitude, disregard this, but it might be worth it finding someone who is worth bringing out there.

I almost always go alone. Some other people just don't understand that that's kinda the point, I wanna be alone man. I don't mind going with a friend, but when I do I always have to take them into account when deciding where to go and for how long and what's gonna happen, because they're probably not as conditioned and integrated to the wilderness as I am and I want them to at least have a good time. If i'm alone I don't have to worry about someone else. I can get up as early as I want and stay out there and larp or fish or whatever for as long as I want and don't have to worry about someone else getting tired or bored.

Yes, it is really the only way to spend a lot of time out in the woods. People get annoying after a couple days. I was born and raised in Alaska and would go out Dall Sheep hunting in the Brooks range for 2 weeks at a time by myself. I didn’t know anyone who wanted to go or who I wouldn’t want to kill after a few days. I also would go moose hunting for a few weeks by myself, too on occasion. Good times.

Few people can understand that. It’s nice to not have to argue about what you’re going to do, or why you’re doing something. Peace and quiet for days or weeks. Ever man should go into the mountains by himself for at least 10 days once in his life. Preferably longer.

I’ve only had to pack a moose a few hundred yards to the boat, fortunately. This one I killed hunting by myself with a bow and arrow. 29th day of hunting in a 30 day season. I only hunted the last five days by myself. No one I knew wanted to go bow hunting.

This is the same valley in a different spot years later. I built a rock wall to hide my tent in hopes a Dall sheep would get close enough to put an arrow in. On the hill far side across the valley in the sunlight if you zoom in you can see white specks that are Dall sheep. No rams in that group, though.

Always do my out stuff alone.
Getting away from other people is as big a part of it for me as actually experiencing the outdoors.
Friends are always saying to let them know when I'm going so they can tag along but I avoid it if at all possible.
I tell them like an hour before I leave and say it was a last minute plan.

Even when I can't get out in the hills properly, I'd spend hours just out in the local fields and parks late at night when nobody's round just wandering round and watching the wildlife myself.

Southcentral anon here, I have a question I think you can answer. Right now I use a 4 wheeler to get to my cabin, but if I take a boat i can get up to a mile away from the property and ride the rest. The river is fast. Would it be unsafe/a good idea to load the wheeler in a boat and take the river myself? I have nearly zero experience on boats. How much would I have to spend on the setup?

Four wheelers are hauled quite often in boats. Of course it depends on the size of the four wheeler and size of the boat. With my 16 foot airboat I could haul a little four wheeler, nothing bigger than probably 300 cc maybe 400 cc with four wheel drive four wheeler, maybe 300 pounds. My boat can haul more weight but the big issue is getting it back and not having a bunch of bow weight to plow water with or even sink the bow when I come off step. I’ve had the boat loaded so much wher that’s happened and not something I’d do ever again. Larger boats and jet boats can haul more safer. Airboats are scary in deep water, but much easier to drive in shallow. Something that you can drive the four wheeler over the bow either over the front or the sides is what I would do. Shallow running jet boats like a sport Jon or xtreme shallow are popular and can haul a larger four wheeler, but you’re not putting much else in there. If you just need transportation, those little big red three wheelers are super popular and you’ll find are pretty expensive in Alaska for that reason. If you’re a rookie with boats there is going to be a big learning curve and some scary moments, but that’s how you learn. Have survival gear for extended stays, communication device, and know someone else with a boat that can come get you when you break down, because you will break down at some point.

Killed him with a bow and arrow. Then I ate him over the next year. His antlers are in my garage, not a big trophy, but considering it was my first bow and arrow kill and I called him within 35 yards to shoot him, it means a lot to me and was pretty exciting doing it alone.

You won’t get a decent boat that is dependable and can haul a decent sized four wheeler for less than $10,000. You could find something for cheaper, it happens. That would be a used around 20 foot flat bottom boat with around a 150 hp motor with jet unit. I don’t know how shallow the river is you’re running and a prop unit might suffice.

I would suggest not getting an airboat until you’ve mastered a jet boat. Airboats can be easily sunk. This happened to a guy I know this past year in the same river I killed that moose. My brother also sank his airboat on that river a few years ago and has since sold it and bought a jet boat.

They lived. But my brother (not his boat pictured) was in the boat by himself. The power cut off, he couldn’t steer , and his bow went up a tree hanging in the river and before he could rush down and push off his back took on too much water and it sank with him on the tree. He spent all day walking back up to the guy he was hunting with, coincidentally enough the guy whose boat is pictured and they had to wench it out. Also trees that hang over can tip you over, even in jet boats.

This really is the best board, thanks for the info.
I think I will save for a larger size jet boat (the creek I have to to take off the river is not deep) and get some experience with boats in the meantime. The thing will open up a lot of the state to me in addition to the cabin, too. Some of the people near me use them on the same creek for four wheelers and snow machines so I will see if I can ride with them a couple of times.

Cool. Cabins are the shit. Here’s mine. I can’t seem to find a picture with the storage/four wheeler she’d done. It’s on a spring fed creek about a mile or two down from where is comes out of the ground. I’ve since moved out of Alaska but still very the cabin, boat, snowmobile, four wheeler, and a bunch of hunting and camping gear up there. I miss it every day.
