I seriously don't see the purpose in trekking poles as long as you're skinny and keep your legs fit. You're burning more calories moving them around and also fucking up the trail more depending on the type of pole you use. Humans have been carrying heavy shit without them for centuries why do we so desperately need them now?

It's pretty gay, paying $$ for aluminum sticks.
I just use a big walking stick i found.

But there is an advantage of the aluminum sticks being 2, a lot easier to climb and keep moving with momentum, especially on bad incline.

With just 1 stick its 50% harder, but still better than legs only.

If you want to go off trails on inclines and walk long distances, youre fucked up without sticks.

Absolutely. I just got back from a several day back country trip. Required navigating landslides, and multiple large stream crossings with a large. I would have been fucked with poles. The damage to the knees alone is worth it. Not to mention, 4 points of contact keeps you balanced with a heavy pack on all terrain. People who use walking sticks on something like the yellowstone boardwalk are dumb, but to say anyone who uses sticks is stupid means you are a dumb larper who never goes out.

They are pretty much mandatory when you're dealing with a shitty ass trail that is a little stream at times and you're hopping from rock to rock trying to keep your boots dry. Going around was not an option because of brush.

took me about 3 2hour hikes to get the hang of it.

At first I was like "I'm too old to re-learn to walk" but now I like them even on level dirt. Started with $12.99 pair from Ebay but now using fancy $25 pair from Amazon at half the weight and better function.

Tried the non-spring tip from Walmart and didn't like. Spring tip is way to go, and reason I haven't got more expensive poles.

Biggest gripe is having your hands in straps. To get the straps right they are pretty snug so its a chore everytime you want to do something with pole-free hands.

Always bantz with anyone passing on horseback, otherwise the horse might freak out if they ain't used to being near Pole-People.

Trekking pole faggots should be made fun of 24/7. Just get a piece of dogwood or ash and sharpen one end and you are gtg. You can even go so far as to remove tha bark and treat it with some kind of oil to preserve it. If it breaks, just get a new one. Trekking poles are even more of a gimmick than those survival tool cards or whatever they are called.

I'm a hill runner, training for a mountain marathon and running down my local range this week I almost slipped a few times on the loose gravel, I immediately bought poles. I sometimes go off trail too and that shit is REALLY valuable when everything else is wet cold grass

To add to this I'll point out that most people here seem to think that you use poles to propel yourselves or keep balance?

They're for using your arms/shoulders to absorb the impact/forces that usually go through your knees and back when you're repeatedly stressing them from walking with a heavy load.
