If you are going to rent, anchorage is fine. The chugach mountains are fantastic for hiking and palmer is trashy. It is the trailer park of alaska. If you are going to buy, the mat su valley has a lot of good opportunity if you want to own 10 or more acres. If you don't need to work, I would recommend the valley outside of more populated areas. You can live anywhere from off the highway, to miles and miles from the road system with floatplane access only. I live in the mat su borough myself and work seasonally elsewhere.

The crime is terrible - there are tons of homeless and drunks. I stay away from downtown Anchorage. It has some very nice WASP parts though which is the ideal place to live. Palmer and Eagle River are also good.
