Hey, /out/

For a long time I've always wanted to just go out and find a nice lake to fish in, also wanting to eat the fish that I catch, also.
Anything I should know first before really doing anything? Any fish I should or shouldn't go for?

The smaller the catfish the better it tastes. Their spines are also more dangerous though.

Don't listen to him, Crappies are fine. Thats why their called pan fish.

Catfish, Trout and panfish are all good. You can eat Bass, but you ain't gonna like it. Definitely make sure you are fishing in a place with low pollutants (industrial areas, mine drainage, etc) fish are really susceptible and the meat can build up dangerous amounts

Check for any health advisories on any fish species in the body of water you're fishing in before going if you're worried about it. Some states game and fish departments make lists all the major fishing spots and species in a state that has been tested to have pollutants in fish flesh. Usually the larger and older the fish the more likely it is to accumulate pollutants. For example, one decent sized lake I fish at has state advisories on older largemouth and flathead cats for mercury. It is highly dependent on location. I eat trout and panfish mostly.

For freshwater fish. Put them on ice as soon as you catch them, you can give them a dose of rock shampoo or bleed them first if you want. Ikejime is not necessary. Clean as soon as possible. If they stay on ice for more than 24 hours check them to make sure they are not going soft. If they do start to go soft, clean immediately.

Putting them in ice water, cutting gills to bleed them or using the percussive stunning method (a rock) all kill the fish. Bashing with a rock/fish bonker kills the fish instantly while the ice/gill cutting takes longer. I personally use a fish bonker then put them on ice. I dont think Ikejime is necessary, freshwater fish are all easily dispatched with the percussive stunning method. Saltwater fish like tuna/halibut/wahoo are much larger with thicker bones which makes ikejime or a gun in the case of halibut a better option.

Large mouth bass is fine, but you have to avoid the lateral line blood vessel while you are cleaning it. (The black line along the body)
Otherwise it taints the meat with that game taste.
However I would only eat smaller ones 15-18 inches. I've pulled out 8 pounders with rat tails hanging out of their anus.

Personally I don't eat bass, but I love catching them. One of my favorite sport fish.
For eating can't go wrong with speckled trout, or rainbow trout, smaller black drum, and flounder.

Take stabby thing ( ice pick) and stab down in the middle of the skull. It should be slightly behind the eyes from the top. From my experience, once I penetrate the skull, I tilt the spike around for a quick sweep and that usually make sure that I hit something vital instantly
