It's funny because you got a falconry book there and I never searched about falconry until a week ago.
It would be pretty cool to have a falcon to hunt with, or at least it sounds pretty cool I still have no idea how practical it would be

I have a friend who does falconry, and it's pretty neat. It takes a lot of money to maintain because our state has laws on the proper enclosure for birds. Cages, equipment, training, and food are expensive but the bird itself is free so it'd be a cool hobby to pick up.

I live in a rural area so I don't think I'd have any problems with laws. Do you know if it's feasible to catch a wild falcon or other birds of prey and train them on your own? Also can you use one multiple times a day for hunting or do they just get tired?

From what I know, catching wild birds is easy, and is common practice. There's a special snare you use, but the bird has to be youg otherwise it won't train. In terms of hunting the bird has to maintain a good weight balance, so working it out constantly isn't the best idea but I don't see why you can't just have a long hunting day.

Thanks, and I respect the ted, but I wanted to keep the list comfy since there are so many ted lists in circulation already. I purposefully didn't put in a lot of non meme IM style books, because I don't like the idea of retards using the list to make explosives or give themselves a reason to.

Gulliver's Travels and Don Quixote both have some /out/, the former more than the latter. Also gonna rec my man Cormac's The Road and Blood Meridian. The Odyssey of course. Travelogues are pretty good too, my wife has a ton of those.

I remeber reading this book when I was in my preteens and liking it. I read part of it recenty and maybe its nostalgia clouding my vision but I still thorughly enjoy this book.

A River runs through it is a fantastic read. Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes is great too. Both good general appreciation of the outdoors/travel themes.

No sorry, though I happen to like Hemingway. To me the fishing trip in "The Sun Also Rises" is some of the comfiest outdoors writing of all time despite it being my least favorite of his novels.

Seymour is about the only one worth paying for. I've read over hundred books on "self-sufficiency", and most of them are fraudulent cashgrabs, while Seymour is only slightly outdated. I've even read one book claiming to be a "step by step guide to self sufficency" on the cover, where the preface stated that "self-sufficency was impossible and the book only dealt with keeping rabbits and growing plants.

The only other general books worth reading are older stuff from the american frontier and the german settlements ("Siedler", basically the guys following the eastern european and south american invitations to civilize those third world shitholes). They're hard to get nowadays though. The frontier stuff is available as reprint from some small time reenactment stores at least, while the settler books can only be found used.
However, these books all assume you have some basic knowledge and only need the details. For ex., one I have tells you how to preserve meat and make sausage, but not how to slaughter pigs. Or how to design the roof beams for a shed, but not how to cover the roof.

Other than that, I'd recommend getting books specific to what you want to do, to get in contact with people that know more than you do, and most importantly, to just try stuff out. At least as long as there's no serious danger and no animals involved.

Chances are it's a meme. Living of 1000m2 is possible only if you have extremely good soil and a constant influx of compost. For reference, in medieval europe, a family under feudal rule would receive at least one acre (1000-12000m2 depending on where they were) as well as grazing and firewood collecting on public fields. If it would have been possible to live on just 1000m2, some lord would have made them do that.

Also, though not representative, I've got 2000m2, and it is just enough to produce vegetables, fruit and honey for my family. Perhaps eggs if I had the fruit trees close enough to keep chickens there. But definitely not wheat, potatoes or some other carb source.

I personally liked reading "Things fall apart" by Chinua Achebe. Story of a stubborn ass of a farmer who isn't able to cope with the changes of colonization. Pretty fair to both sides, the colonial rulers are brutal but the tribe's customs can be pretty fucked up too. It's short, give it a try.

Also what is with all the new posts here? Used to be so slow. Lurker mostly until the book lists, pay attention to these and post all you have. Censorship of books is really taking hold and I only get the great book recommendations from /out/ when we have a post every few months. Also Powell’s bookstore has a thing about anti-banning, but Barnes and Nobel, Amazon. Etc all skew recs towards lame stuff. Also would recommend Thomas Sowell ‘s Basic Economics I read it last year on trail and it really helped solidify my political stance which is intrinsically linked to my love out out, also any college now will not teach finances let alone conservatives viewpoints. So that’s deep censor stuff now too

Pretty good for a non fiction, it's well written and direct. Eds probably one of the best mountaineers of all times all thing considered. Not as preachy as Krakauer's stuff which I like. If you're into big mountain expeditions it's a good read.

By all accounts, yes. It is true that there are some operations (i.e. canned shoots) where there is no risk and it is basically a point and shoot venture. However, there are also a huge amount of hunting opportunities in Africa that are fair chase and can offer you that authentic experience that you are after (i.e. in your case, fair chase and dangerous). One website that I find very useful for locating hunts is Book Your Hunt. Among other things, it lets you filter hunting trips based on destination, territory (i.e. not fenced or fenced), difficulty and game classification. If you are a hunter, I would certainly recommend checking it out. Full disclosure, I don't get any kickbacks from this company, I just think that it is a great resource for hunters.

You cannot hunt endangered animals, period. It is a serious felony to do so. In addition, the hunting of animals that are listed as "vulnerable" by the IUCN (e.g. lion, etc.) is strictly controlled. And yes, there are plenty of fair chase hunting trips available for these types of animals.

From what I have read, hunting is currently illegal in Brazil. You may be thinking of other South American countries like Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. The latter two do have hunting opportunities, but Paraguay is currently under review.
