Thinking of getting a wood gas stove. I've read and watched reviews of a few models but I want to hear an opinion from someone who uses one in the /out/door: beside the obvious, are there any upsides and/or downsides you hadn't thought of before actually putting one to use?

the stove restricts airflow to the wood causing smokey build up of gases and then reintroduces air higher up causing gas to reignite for a second burn that is hotter than the wood would have been burning naturally

can't recommend a brand though because I'm in Washington and they're shit with wet wood

If you don't mind the bother or aren't hiking very far they're fine.

You don't actually burn wood when burning wood. What happens is it releases gas when it heats up and that's what you see burning.

Not quite dumbass. A wood fire is actually two separate combustion reactions: the first is the combustion of the wood itself (the embers); the second is the combustion of the gases released by the former (the flames).

Alcohol is light, you can make your stove yourself really cheaply, it's cleaner than wood, for weekend it may be even lighter than gas (since you don't have to bring heavy metal can to carry your fuel), and it's almost completely silent (so you can enjoy sounds of nature, unlike with gas stoves).

Currently no, fire is not allowed. Hometown yes though, and that's what this would be for. Campfire is tolerated if you show you're not irresponsible.
Going to hike, fire would be for coffee and cooking a meal for one person.

How fast does it consume and how long can you expect to boil water at, let's say, 20°C? Only seen it used in videos but never used an alcohol stove myself.

+ Free fuel in most forests
+ Effective if the same model as in OP's pic

- That free fuel...can be wet and not very effective
- Some countries have laws that prevent you from gathering fuel
- You need to gather and process the fuel to small pieces, the stove won't take large pieces of wood

You need to consider how viable the fuel source is in your country and environment, but otherwise it's simply great if you are allowed to use it properly.

Somewhere between 20 to 40 ml of denatured alcohol would burn for around 10-15 minutes - my 500ml cup of water gets boiling in around 7-10 minutes.

Alcohol stoves with a wick are much easier to start (they don't need any priming) and with this design you don't need a separate pot stand - highly recommend.

You're talking about a wick and not needing a pot stand but I don't exactly see how this works out with this design? First off I don't understand the point of the wick here, and second this design would only fit small cups (like your 500ml one) but not pans, so for cooking I would still add a pot stand to this design.
Also another question pops up, seems we have been discussing liquid alcohol since earlier but what about solid alcohol stoves?

I got one of these portable fire pits for the back yard. Tall enough that it doesn't kill grass underneath.
I mostly use it to smoke out the fruit flies that keep eating my figs.

For the price tag its a bit steep but something heavy duty and stainless steel would be great. I know propane or alcohol is cleaner. I have an alcohol stove which is used to heat water. The little bowls the trangia came with are so small its hard to cook anything in it for two people. So yes the wood stove which not as idea is more so an aesthetic thing for me, I love wood smoke but with the higher efficiency of a rocket stove it should be a nice addition to the kit

In Australia you can’t, NPs specify liquid or gas burners only, that includes places where fires are authorised in fire pits. Collecting your own wood (including tinder/twigs) is also banned. Saw a couple 18-year-olds get BTFO by a ranger just last week for not providing their own wood.

That being said twig stoves are great; I made a ghetto version during quarantine, pic related. Used a baby formula can, milo can, wire to suspend inner can in the bottom, old bucket handle, and cut down two off-cuts of steel for the top plate.

This is why I’m always in state forests.
