Na, one of the caves I expore in regularly is mapped with cairns because the walls have a large amount of iron ore, preventing navigation by compass. The local grotto that protects the cave even has a version of the surveys with cairn locations marked.

Cairn is Gaelic for “pile of rocks” so I’d say it’s ok in /out/ Ireland and Scotland. I’ve seen them as markers across bleak featureless backcountry and as memorials for the dead.
