So let's have a thread. I'm super interested in being a ranger with the USFS but there are so many sources out there saying I'm going to need 4 years of college. As we all know the state of modern college it's something I'd prefer to avoid. How can I get employed in the USFS with little to no college? Exhaustive amounts of volunteer work is a good start I guess, but what else?

just literally look at usajobs for the job descriptions of whatever things in the forest service you want to apply for. they will all say the required experience/education. in every case, some amount of one can be substituted for the other, but some may require a minimum education no matter what.
ranger jobs are also the most competitive ones so meeting those min requirements wont be enough and a degree will always help.
you may want to rethink your uninformed stance on college. any program you would be in on a track to be a ranger (except maybe towards interp) will just be full of vets on gi bill looking to be rangers themselves and have none of the liberal indoctrination experience i assume you are imagining. college is also the single best way to make connections, you will find fellow students or professors with ties to local parks and rec, or will introduce you to programs/jobs/etc that you might not have found otherwise

Just go to college if you want to do something with your life that requires college. I'm not from the US but I doubt it is as bad as you seem to think. Especially in the field you are looking for. You will learn many things that can be useful and you can still do other things beside college like volunteer or side job. And after that you have way more job freedom if you choose the right education.

Army infantry is a pretty /out/ job sometimes, when you aren't cleaning the COF or doing other dumbass bullshit. I greatly enjoy my time in the field.

Short answer is you can't.
Long answer is in a sea of hundreds of other applicants with bachelor's and master's degrees, your application is just going to get thrown out or you'll be stuck in a dead end GS3 job for the rest of your life.

Navy HM with marines, and I agree. Garrison always blows, but LARPing in the field is fun. When the day is over, dudes are chilling playing cards, you're enjoying one last smoke before bed time. Very comfy. Just came out of the field yesterday, and hearing the rain patter on the pos base-x at night was nice.

probably a majority of the perms I know between GS-5 (lowest perm except apprentices and the new 18/8 positions this year) and GS-9 never went to college. Literally two of them are veterans (actually, I think one of those two might have a degree anyway). They're not rangers--most of them are in fire or something closely related like fuels or dispatch, "ranger" in the Forest Service is an admin/political position or occasionally a law enforcement one--but what you said is just flat wrong. The compensation isn't great, but with overtime and low COL it's not terrible, and if you want to work in the woods you're not gonna find much better.

to add: with the move towards direct hire for entry-level fire positions and the move towards replacing 1039 seasonal positions with 13/13 perms at the same GS grade, it's only going to get better for applicants without college degrees who are otherwise qualified, especially if they take the time to reach out to duty stations they'd be interested in working at.

I was army infantry and now I'm in coast guard aviation. It's truly a hidden gem. I've been stationed in North Carolina, Alaska, and now Oregon in the coast guard, and I've done more cool hiking and hunting than I ever could have dreamed of. Everyone in aviation is pretty /out/ in the coast guard, you won't get stuck on a shitty boat in aviation, and the quality life in the coast guard is so much higher than any other branch. In addition, unlike any other military branch, you are doing a very real world mission every single day in the coast guard instead of just training for combat you'll likely never see like in the army. Here in Alaska we fly search and rescue missions back to back to back, sea and inland

You will never be a district ranger without college, and depending on location probably even a master's degree, due to competition for the position. You can get up to the GS12 paygrade with no college at all if you go into the right tech series. Do some reading.

All I can reasonably say in response to that is that "amount to anything" can mean a lot of different things. When I think of the non-college non-veteran perms I know, of whom there are quite a lot, I'd be pretty content with the income/benefits/lifestyle they have, especially controlling for age (e.g. the 31yo GS-5 senior firefighter vs the mid-forties engine captain who's a GS-8 with a couple steps or maybe a 9.).
