I lived rough for a while, still know some of the tricks.
There's always people I can stay with for a while if I need to, but nowhere permanent.
Trying to deal with the system is a nightmare, many people take for granted the second question anyone in the civil service asks you is your address.
Try once just telling them that you don't have a postal address and watch how they react, they think you have made a problem for them.
"how can this guy expect me to do my paperwork if I have nowhere to send documents or an address to put on record". Even when services are online, it often doesn't matter- sure you can lie, but that's a crime. I'm not a criminal.
Try getting a bank card, a passport, a drivers license, a phone plan.
A lot of people simply don't care and some want to help- but they can't. The system doesn't leave room anymore for people to bend rules, and the guy who writes them has never lived in a tent.
