>>1807516Honestly I used to carry a knife everywhere but I stopped after a while- I just found that I rarely actually needed one.
Moraknivs in SS have good sheathes, cost little, are lightweight and if you don't really need a knife they are a good choice. I use one as my fishing knife though it does not float.
I use an Opinel as a picnic knife- the wood swelled on my first one and it bricked up and the mechanism is impossible to get grit out of.
However they will last forever if not exposed to any muck and are decidedly non-threatening. hence I only use it on picnics as it was probably intended.
Mushroom people like them as well, I suspect because there aren't make makers of mushroom knives and Opinels are like 5$
For going innawoods I have a strong preference for full tang lower carbon knives that hold a rougher edge. They are less likely to chip/snap but require polishing.
The rough edge can be important if the vegetation in your area is hard.
Honestly I have never bought a branded one, I prefer to just re-handle old farm steel tools- because they are hammer forged something about the vibration on them means you can just baton them into a tree like a nail.
Yes a file is fine, I made my first one out of a sickle in the causasian style but it had a rats tail. Then I just found this bowie knife hammered into a tree up to the hilt- It had been stuck there years and the blade is still black as fuck but after re-handling does bonus damage against skinwalkers and homeless people
