Then after unfucking myself, the very next cast I caught another bass, not very big felt like a bit more than 2lbs, he thrashed while I was attempting to remove the whopper plopper and I just let go so I wouldn't get hooked in the fingers. For Daiwa Im looking at 2 different models, a 6'10 medium light with line weight 2-14g and a 6'6 medium power with line weight 6-18g.

The DAM mini spin is 7'8 medium power rated line weight is 7-20g.

This will be my first upgrade from a walmart rod, I mostly panfish and freshwater fishing. I would like to have a well rounded travel rod, will anyone shed some light on the pros and cons? Will telescopic rod break easily if I hook something big?

Anyone who breaks telescopic rods are just mis handling them.. I have one myself that I use quiet often..the reels garbage. But not enough for me to care about changing it.

Downside is they're not as sensitive to feel, and a bit heavy.

Anyone got tips on not snagging through heavy weeds? I got one of them fish hooks with the spring wire on it and it helped me snag much less but seemed to make the fish less interested in the bait and when I did get a bite id Pull the hook right out of the hooks mouth or if let the fish run with it and end up hooking them in the guts. A small bluegill that somehow managed to end up in my small 250gal garden pond hasn't shown himself to me since he first went in, although my family says they see him sometimes and the slugs from my garden that I toss in seem to disappear. You don’t have to use a tapered leader but your presentation will likely be dogshit without one. Fly fishing leaders are very stiff in the butt to very flexible in the terminal end in addition to being tapered. The combination of the two causes the leader to lay out flat on the water at the end of your cast with the fly at the end exactly where you're trying to place it. If you don’t want to pay for the manufactured leaders you can buy the materials to knot about 100 of your own for the same amount you would spend on six or eight store bought ones. In a pinch though you could just tie mono to the end but it would really be a temporary solution.

If you can't tie a fucking arbor knot you probably won't have the mental capacity to go fishing. Maybe when your worthless self dies your fishing rod and reel will be taken by your vastly more successful and intelligent brothers or sisters to give to their kid, and the 10 year old will learn the arbor knot in 2 seconds

You can but smaller dries and larger wind resistant dries wont cast well, especially if its windy. I do 4 part leaders if im fishing for pan fish because its low stakes but for trout I do 7 to 10 part leaders for dries depending on situation.

Theres really not. I guess a 7' medium comes close, even if not ideal it should be able to "make it work" for most freshwater applications

Only two rods you need for freshwater. Throw in an ultralight and it’ll be perfect.

I was thinking the same thing, but I'm not sure what to get to replace it. I know I want another med-heavy because muh top water muh punching, but a (good) MH spinning rod seems hard to find right now. If I change over to a memecaster, I'll have this extra spinning reel spooled up with 20lb braid laying around I'll feel compelled to find a use for.

Are you talking about the Wachusett Reservoir? Either way you need to fish from the bottom for any chance of catching trout. It's difficult this time of year. You'll have a much better time fishing for panfish and bass.

It happens sometimes dude. One time when I was getting my wife into fishing she made a bad cast and hooked me in the side 3 inches or so below the ribs with a rooster tail. That was fun to get out cause the flesh has some give there but luckily we were able to curve it around and cut the barb.

I bought one of those super cheap Chinese carp poles that don't have a proper handle on them, caught a couple little cats on it and didn't really care for it, so I bought a cheap handle kit and threw it on.

What kind of fishing would this best be for? Pan fish? It's like a 10 foot noodle rod. I've got it rigged up with some BB shot and a bobber I'll give it a shot. What do you guys think?

I really think a lighter end rod is more fun than anything else in terms of beginners. But it kind of sucks when you have a 3lb bass on an ultralite rod with 4lb line

Once i foul hooked a fairly large carp on 6lb mono. I spent over an hour trying to tire it out while it peeled drag before someone who had been watching hopped in their kayak and paddled out to it and unhooked it for me. Pretty bad fucking time.

how do you even remove lures from the fish without getting hooked? I don't even use those bait lures anymore with the dual/triple treble hooks because the fish freaks the fuck out when it comes time to remove and i've almost hooked myself, but usually the fish just hooks itself with another hook

Weirdly enough I catch significantly more bass on the smaller sized soft plastics like the Z-Man TRD Bugz than regular sized creature baits like the Strike King Rage Bug or the Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver.

Lake Ontario on the Canadian side. More specifically in the Greater Toronto Area.

there's a pond near my house but it has very limited shore access (few open spots due to reeds and the couple of open spots have trees that overhand) and I only ever seen 3" baby bass in there. I like to catch the first dink fish on a lure then fillet him and use little strips of that. Works great for perch, and fresh fish skin holds on a hook so much better than worm.

I've also had good luck with frozen squid. It's cheap as fuck, I thaw it and cut it into uneven rings, which I cut in half to make a tapered strip, then freeze in smaller bags for using later. Squid lasts forever on a hook too.

I had one in a storage tote, add newspaper, and old veggies, no meat or dairy, keep it moist.
They love banana skins.

The only SLX worth getting is the JDM SLX DC. The USDM SLX is decent if you’re on a very tight budget but I’d also recommend looking at the Daiwa Tatula 100 or the SV TW.
If you can afford it I’d say go for the Curado, it feels and casts way better than the plasticky SLX.

What is a good levelwind reel for general saltwater fishing? I really enjoy catching sharks but I find that with my current shit-tier levelwind (Tsunami 4000, literally a $20 reel) I can't cast out the distance that I need, and DESU I doubt the thing would survive being hooked up to a large fish.

Got a loicense to fish in my local river. Its got barbel, big chub, a few trouts, and perch.
Kinda been having a hard time tho. Lots of vegetatio so its hard to get to the water. Also the stream is pretty fast and its hard to find calm spots.

Long casting with convention reel take practice. It might be easier to paddle your bait out with a kayak, paddleboard, boogie board, or surfboard or something. A good size shark will blow up a cheap level wind though.

was catching bluegills today with my tanago setup again, but I thought to myself. I should really be catching the tiny little fry. I cut the nikko sashi bait in half to make it even smaller but they didn't go for it. So I said, fuck it, just use the bare hook. This place has so much cover so many places are hard to access but there’s tons of dink large mouth and plenty one pound plus
Easily 5lb catfish and lots of bluegill.
Not sure what the waterway is for but glad to breakaway from the over stuffy waterway I’ve been fishing.
There’s a second next to it which may be even better I just don’t know how to fish it with out being caught or high anxiety.

We live in arkansas and go to the gulf every year with our bass boat. We mostly fish intercostals, but just use heavier line and you'll be fine. Just wash the piss out of it after each time you go out with fresh water.

Bass rod is perfect for most west coast shore saltwater fishing unless you are far enough north for stripers. You’ll only need upgrade when you go out on boat/kayak far enough for yellowtail or more
Shark/ray fishing also require heavy gear but personally, that shit is boring

If you want to shark fish go with a Penn Fierce III 8000 with 65lb power pro braid and a 150lb wire leader and a 5/0 circle hook to start out. Sharks love a fish that is oily so a cut piece of a live blue runner or a mullet or a red mouth Grunt I seem to get more sharks with the head of the fish than the body.

Man Go Pros are so shit I've lost a lot of footage because thfucking camera over heats so it turns off so the whole time you think you're recording it recorded for like 1-2 minutes before the camera turned off come back come don't even have anything good recorded, stupid having to keep checking the camera to keep making sure it's still on.
Don't use a Go Pro in direct sunlight with a temperature outside of like 90° apparently these cameras can't handle it.
Also the stupid case makes the audio sound like shit and low when you wear it on your head.

Never fished a day in my life, however it does seem like the exact kind of hobby I would like and I have been meaning to start for at least 2 years now. It seems to be a hobby where even the people who consider themselves beginners are impressively skilled. Can anyone point me in the direction of any resources for beginners? Any guides, youtube channels, tips, literally anything that you would recommend to help me get into it? I would be very grateful

i went fishing with my cousin yesterday, all we caught was pic related and no one else had caught anything either.
around mid day, i was flipping over rocks and found a helgramite, so i put it on his hook, and told him to put it in he soft water right behind a particular rock. within 30 seconds he hooked pic related. i still had fun.

I live in the UK in the midlands so probably not the best place for someone who wants to start but some guys I work with used to often talk about fishing in the rivers and canals that are nearby, they're the ones who actually got me interested in it but I've since lost touch with them.
So I guess if possible I'd like to fish in those rivers/canals too without having to travel excessively far from home (Like having to drive to the nearest coast when I live bang in the middle of the land).
As for why, for recreation, I'd like an activity that takes me out the house for more than just working and from how my ex-coworkers used to talk about it, it's quite relaxing most of the time and gives you a feeling of accomplishment. Budget up to £200 (like $250) to start off with, is that enough?

Plenty of opportunities to fly fish if you're further inland in the UK. Wading a peaceful stream while catching trout is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things to do.
Get acquainted with your local fly shops or join your local fly fishing club. There will be people who will help you get started.

Toronto guy here as well who predominantly does bike fishing. I put my two piece rod in a rod case/tube, and stick it in my 45L rear pannier. I have to keep an eye on it from time to time and make sure it hasn't fallen out when I ride over bumpy terrain. I've posted pics of my setup before in previous threads.
There's still fish at Bluffers Park, depending on the time of year of course. Its a great place for Pike during early spring. But this is Toronto we're talking about here so be prepared to catch nothing more often than something.
Also be careful where you fish, the marina there is quite sticky when it comes to people fishing the area and you don't want to run afoul of them.

I wouldn't take the fly fishing route that other people are talking about here, they are americans with american waters which are nothing like british waters. fly fishing here is expensive and difficult unless you're in scotland or ireland

I would say find out which club owns the canals and rivers you are interested in - most of the good clubs will have online websites talking about the venues they own which could include the river/canal you have in mind

you have two options, lure fishing for pike/zander/perch/chub or bait fishing using a feeder or float for carp/tench/bream/roach/chub

I am also in the UK and taught myself lure fishing this year in February, have caught about 20 pike, 2 perch. I also tried bait fishing and caught a little bit of everything

the more I catch these things the less I understand what the big appeal is

they aren’t pretty to look at and nobody eats them either. they also seem to bite almost anything, it’s not as challenging or fun

Only if you want carp. That place stinks of sewage too because the water treatment plant is right there.

There's also Frenchman's Bay in Pickering and the area around Rouge Beach (where the Rouge river empties into Lake Ontario).
If you go to Rouge Beach, don't fish the semi-circle boardwalk that's further in. There's no fishing signs there and MNR is always in the area issuing fines.
