Where does /out/ find the time to go /out/, assuming you're not all unemployed/McMinions? I'm a recent high school grad who has had a full time job for 2 or 3 months now. I work construction as an Electrician's Apprentice, so needless to say, I don't have a hell of a lot of leverage. I haven't been camping since Spring Break 2013, and am really very often too tired to go hiking (something that I enjoy very much).

Help me, /out/; you're my only hope.

Where? Do you have a job like this? I currently live in Central Florida, and am hoping to get my Apprenticeship finished before moving (4 years). Plus, I'm about flat broke, because I've only just started my adult life. But if there's something promising out there, I'll save up some money, drop everything, and move.

I used to go every weekend, either on my property in western NC or a nearby national forest. I got burned out on that so now I basically plan out weekend long trips, once a month, to locations I could have never visited using my old system.

It helps to plan out trips, I've found, going so far as to create an itinerary to adhere to. I used to just wing it (wake up Saturday morning, drive to sight(if it were close enough, I'd drive straight from work Friday and haul ass to set up camp before sundown), camp until Sunday afternoon).

I work in a trade too, OP, so I know how tiring it can be. Planning things out and preparing a few weeks in advance makes it a lot more enjoyable and peaceful. Trying to pack and plan a few days before took a lot of fun out of it.

Do you not get vacation? Add a day here or there to your one day off and you can easily pull off an overnight trip every few months.

Sometimes even before I go into work.

I get a ton of vacation time every year (been with the company for ... going on 8 years next month) so I get 5 or 6 weeks of vacation a year, plus PTO and four 8-hour "floating holidays".

So I'll take a vacation day or two and make a 2-day weekend into a 3- or 4-day weekend.

Starting up as an electrician in a non-Union state is pretty difficult. I spend a lot of time doing the bitch work, and they pretty much dictate when and where I work. "Oh, hey, you're working in Jacksonville for 2 days this weekend". As said before, I bust my ass 6 days a week. I can't really manage to go /out/ during the work week.
I just had a fucking brain blast. They're always sending me to Jacksonville and South Georgia.
I'll just make a quick backpacking trip around up there.

If you think unions are the answer or something to support go fuck yourself. I worked in the engineering staff at a major US hospital for 2 years and had to work with union electricians for renovation projects. They were all incredibly pompous, lazy (NEED MY 15 MINUTE BREAK BY GOD), and completely inept (and I'm not even an electrician). They are the scum of society. Ditto for union pipe fitters.

That said, the Okefenokee area is great in winter for camping. I mean fucking great. I went last February.

8-10 years ago I was working 7-10 day stretches, 12-14 hour days, with maybe 4 days off in a month. No benefits, so I was on the hook for health insurance. Overtime was nice, but fuck that was a lot of working.
Now I'm salaried, and I put in about 7 hours yesterday, ditched out early because upper management was all at an off-site meeting and I wrapped up everything I needed to get done.

Lot of work to get here, but ... it's nice.

I used to be in a situation like yours. My first year of college I was taking 16 units and working two jobs, close to 60 hours a week. Getting /out/ was what kept me sane. I bought a headlamp and if I knew I had a free day or a late work start I would hike out at night after work. Hammock up in a spot and then pass out wake up the next morning. Since I knew I would only be there for like 18 hours or whatever I had enough room in my bag for a couple of school books would do some reading or whatever. Would hike out whenever I had to. Definitly not ideal but it was totally worth it. Squeeze it in whenever you can. I also hiked the first couple of miles of every trail I could find in any spare time I had. When I had more time I would pick one of the trails I liked the most and do the whole thing.

Don't let anyone try to sway your opinion - I saw it all the time. Union workers are in a tizzy because they know most people in our generation (I'm only about 10 years older than you) don't care for their bullshit and they're dying a slow death to guys like you that want to work and make an honest living.

I was an apprentice once too. I know about the terrible starting pay and mundane/laborious work just to have a chance to learn a bit more. It paid off for me and it will pay off for you; just stick it out, even when it seems pointless or useless. Everyone has been in those ruts and yeah they suck, it's depressing. I'm telling you though, if you stick it out, it's great. I am by no means a rich man, I make a decent living, and I'm not anywhere close to the top of the ladder but I was in your shoes about 10 years ago. I'm interviewing for 80k jobs in Georgia right now and it's going very well - you know exactly how well 80k in Georgia is so keep it up and you'll be there soon enough.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate what you're saying. My company subcontracts a lot to Mexican crews, and it gets me a little depressed to think that I can so easily be replaced by someone who doesn't want to learn, just be paid. Then you talk about 80k and I remember that there is a market for talent. I just have to get there. I really appreciate it. I'll suck it up for a few years, sacrifice my hobbies for a while, then start making some money to enjoy my free time.

I just feel a bit lost, as I made a big decision to not go to college. I could have gone, and all of my life, people have been telling me that to not go is to fail. But I look at the current affairs of this country and I see the need for tradesmen, rather than dick-sucking bureaucrats. I'm just under a bit of stress because fall semesters start up soon and I'm questioning my decisions. Thank you for the words of encouragement. They really mean a lot.

Ding ding ding ding. I have a degree too and only use it to add a few lines on my resume; it's a nice fall back to have too. Stick that out as well.

A man that knows how to use his hands and has verifiable experience doing so will never be out of work.
