According to the Wikipedia text he walked 16 miles in total, thereof 11 miles on the BLM road. Maybe hypothermia kicked in and he no longer acted rational.
The stupid thing was that they drove this road in spite of the conditions and three warning signs.

one of the articles i read said she had been hiking with friends but they parted ways not long before she got lost. she probably relied on others too much. before starting the trail she had taken a class from an experienced hiker and they got some quotes from him. he said this had nothing to do with the dangers of the trail, that the hiker not being prepared was to blame. that's funny coming from the guy who helped prepare her but she didn't do what he said so RIP

Well yeah, they obviously don't work if you don't have it with you. Also 406mHz COSPAS/SARSAT beacons don't require a monthly subscription fee like Spot or InReach. All you have to do is register your beacon ID.

yeah definitely the superior option imo. the paid ones let you do things like "check in" and let someone know you're safe or even sms but is that worth $120-160/year? most people already consider the simple PLBs a luxury but i think that's the way to go

A mile is a long distance if bushwacking, especially if there is considerable overgrowth.
The guy clearly had hypothermia considering he took his pants off and if was snowing hard, the tracks and road they came in could have been covered up so he lost track of it.

Yeah that's a mile a day. Its extremely slow and they are on a TV show so nothing bad will happen. When you are actually lost and scared they mile is a long distance.

A lot of the features on higher end private network beacons are useful for expedition level shit, effectively combining a distress beacon with a sat phone, but obviously that's a niche market so they have to market it to normies in order to keep it cost effective. I will say that the bread crumb feature would be useful if it's a situation where someone has gotten into trouble but is unable to activate the SOS function. Whoever is watching on the other end can see that you haven't moved from one spot from a couple of days and can send help to that location to see if you're alright. But that's still something that's probably more useful to longer term /out/ists vs weekenders.

If someone knows your approximate last location and there's no immediate danger it's best to stay put. Last year an old coworker of mine was hiking near Fairbanks and got separated from his friends. If he had stayed put they would have found him the next day. Unfortunately he got cocky and decided to try and follow a river back to civilization, it ultimately took 4 days to find him because S&R started at his last known location and he was always moving away from them.
