Anyone seen the comet? It’s going to be cloudy and rainy where I am for the next week. Curious to know if you can see it pretty good with the naked eye

It’s supposed to start rising higher in the sky (so you can see it earlier in the night). Right now it’s pretty close to the horizon an hour or two before dawn. Think you’re good for another month or so.

Yes, it’ll be within the Big Dipper after sunset and you’ll be able to see it until about 1am. It’s not super high in the sky though so it might need to gain some elevation to get over any mountains in your view. I’m about to do a little night hike in an hour or so to see if I can spot it

This is as clear as it got for my camera, the tail and comet were faint but clearly distinguishable with the naked eye if you knew where to look.

I went outside 2 times tonight, I couldnt see a thing, the sky is to bright right now (too far north).
Its been overcast pretty much all nights but this one since the comet arrived.

Feels bad, man.

The comet is really only visible for a limited time, less than an hour, and it was pretty low on the horizon when I saw it. If there is a mountain nearby try to observe it from there at the right time. If your geography sucks you might be out of luck.

I’m in northern NY and have tried to see it three times so far, and only caught a fuzzy glimpse through clouds once through binocs. It’s been so foggy or cloudy at night for the past week. I’m hoping tomorrow night. I’m in the mountains too so it’s hard to get an open view without spending a couple hours climbing a mountain. I’m hoping tomorrow night after work if the weather cooperates

I went out last night after reading this thread and gazed at the nw corner of the sky. No idea if I saw it or not. Was in Ocala FL btw. Go outing tho...found a niceee piece of lighter knot and swam in the springs in the morning.

As of today your best chance at seeing it is in the evening about an hour after sunset unless you live above 48° N where it's still visible at both ends of the night. It's expected to get dimmer over the next week, but rise in declination. I think it's about mag 3 as of last night but with good skies the tail was visible to the naked eye and it looked great through binoculars.

I had the same experience. Was at a dark sky area in southern Utah and I needed binoculars to see it. Some younger people I was with could see it better with the naked eye.

The brightness (apparent magnitude) peaked around 4th of july, at +2, which is the same brightness as Mars

If you saw it this weekend (during the new moon) the magnitude was around +5 to +6, which is the brightness of Triangulum galaxy. That's pretty hard to see if you're in a light polluted area

I went to look for it on Saturday in a bortle class 4, wasn't able to see it but could pick it up on long exposure
On Sunday I saw it in a bortle class 3, it was immediately visible as soon as you stepped out of the car. Light pollution makes a big difference when looking for something that dim.

YES! I had no idea what I was looking at when I first saw it because it was kinda faint and just slightly above horizon but one of the other campers spotted it and immediately knew what it was. What an awesome sight, it was during my first backpacking trip two nights ago. And yeah you can definitely see it with your naked eye.
