Would there be any point to snorkeling or scuba diving in alpine/mountain lakes or rivers?

I'm guessing that the water would be pretty clear, but is there anything worth seeing?

Also, how cold does that water get?

Whitewater kayaker.
“Alpine” will be too steep and you’ll get hurt or drown. I’ve done it for a laugh a couple of times in fast flowing rivers. Mask, snorkel, wetsuit, PFD. Was pretty darn fun. A friends brother does it with scuba gear, reckons it’s awesome. You just need to make sure you have clear water so you can see well ahead.

There really isn’t any point. You’re not going to find natural life in alpine lakes. It’s literally just melted snow that accumulated in a valley so it’s not like fish have any way to get to it. This is also why I’ve never understood the fascination people have with exploring the depths of Lake Tahoe or Crater Lake. Stupid prick, look at the ground you’re standing on. That is what the bottom of Lake Tahoe looks like.

specifically lake serene (way too crowded imo), copper lake, and little heart lake.

its pretty boring, just mossy logs and shit. visibility is really good tho, better than anything i saw in hawaii or cabo.

In my experience it is cold as shit and there isn't anything novel. Some cool rocks and stuff maybe, but not worth snorkeling. Also it feels as cold as an ice bath, I always jump into the water and immediately want to get out.
There might be some cool lakes bellow treeline worth snorkeling that have fish but I'm not certain. Those are a bit warmer and I could see snorkeling them in a wetsuit.

Yes, cold. Yes, plenty of life. In my experience, some of the most beautiful stuff I've ever seen has been underwater in a freshwater mountain lake.

Like you say, nothing lives there (which is why the water is so clear).

Years ago I saw a documentary about people diving in a lake like you describe. They hauled scuba gear up a mountain. They described it as "flying" and "being weightless" high above a bare rocky lake bottom.

So I think the feeling, the uniqueness, the experience, is why you would do it.

Depends on the lake and the biome

Meltwater runoff into a rock basin is pretty much sterile. No sediment bottom to speak of to support microorganisms. Without micros, no food web to sustain plankton, insects, and larger fish.

1. It's cold. Get a wet or dry suit and, even then, only go in summer.
2. Don't go too far up the mountains, as there's less and less interesting life to see.
3. Don't go too far down the mountains, as the water gets too cloudy.
4. Watch out for fast moving currents.
5. Watch out for piranhas.

I just think you're going to lug a heap of shit up a mountain, fool around with the altitude and pressure of the tackle because scuba kits aint made for altitude, you're going to get half froze and discover a pile of silt.

I think lakes would be pretty boring, but some friends and I will go snorkeling by the local whitewater section during low water to find things people have lost in the river. It’s a fun little treasure expedition, I’ve gotten some nice sunglasses and rings before, friend got a new go pro. I imagine you can do the same at popular jump rock places.

i went sledging in new Zealand. it was pretty fun but honestly white water kayaking is a lot more fun.
when i was diving in the bahamas i met some Canadians who went swift river scuba diving. they seemed to really enjoy it but it sounded like they did as a one off just to try.

you might as well try because being underwater is comfy AF newayz.

I assume you're in America but there might be some unique freshwater/alpine snorkeling experiences there. You'd have to look into them individually most likely. If you're in Europe, there are some cool places in the actual Alps.

A pristine alpine lake. They don't allow gasoline motors on the lake and haven't since 1909. Also good for a hiking trip to the local glacier and for stopping off at the old St. Bartholoma's church to drink in the biergarten.
>Reschensee, Italy
A reservoir in South Tyrol. There are a few submerged structures, particularly a 14th century church steeple poking out of the lake. I think most of the church was demolished but there are still a few remains under the water.

All of these locations are quite cold and you'd need a wetsuit full of piss to be even somewhat comfortable in them. I've only been to the Koenigssee and even in the middle of summer it was about 15C/60F. The others are probably similar.

This anon has the right lake.
There are some lakes worth diving. Especially those with rivers flowing out of them. For this enables a rich biodiversity in fish'n'shit. This discussion about wildlife in alpine lakes is shit. There are ponds of molten snow in high altitudes with no wildlife except larva of insects and there are wildlife rich lakes in lower areas.
You have to check individually.

Expect the water temperature to be dropping to 4°C very quick.

I think they’ restricted diving and about anything else by quite a lot because of how crowded it is. It’s a beautiful lake, sure, but the fAct that it’s a 5 minute “hike” from the nearest parking lot really ruined it.oh, and that it was promoted as Austria’s most beautiful lake by either national TV or some big newspaper also didn’t help. You don’t even need Instagram to ruin shit.

Yeah I just googled it to remember the name, after I made the post I read up about it and they restricted scuba in 2016 to preserve it. Harsh but fair if it's that accessible. There's probably some better, lesser known spots, that one just had a cool gimmick.
