2. Grind (watercooled is best, but splashing water after every few passes works). Basically grind towards the edge from one side until a burr forms, then alternatingly from both sides until burr is gone, then finer grit.
3. soak black rust in fat, heated wax or (if you want to paint later, or just don't like the sticky feel of fat or wax) 1:1 mix of boiled linseed oil and thinner. Wipe off excess, then let dry / cool off. The linseed oil takes 2-5 days to dry completely.
(3a.) paint with any 1-component paint
4. polish, as fine as you can
5. prepare the shaft. Sledgehammer shaft might work. Put shaft into head, look where it sticks, then remove material. continue until shaft fits about 3/4 of the way.
(5a.) Thin the shaft as much as you're fomfortable with. This reduces recoil and protects your wrists, but increases risk of breaking.
6. seat shaft. Basically, put it into the eye with the head facing down, then smack the grip end with a hammer until the shaft is all the way in. Drive in wedges to fix the shaft in place.
7. wax, fatten or oil the shaft.
>>1821077>vinegarWhen will this meme ever die? While vinegar removes rust, the bare steel will start rusting again immediately. Unless you paint it immediately with a 2-component paint, vinegar does more harm than good. If you have to play with acids, at least use phosphoric acid. That at least forms a protective layer, though you still need to wash it off completely once the reaction is done.
