I've tried multiple carrying setups:
>inside bag, on top of everything else>on a long strap across the shoulder over my backpack straps>on a belt clipInside the bag is the easiest, but inconvenient as you need to stop and unpack it every time.
Long strap across the shoulder is okay.
On a belt clip is theoretically the best but the weight of the camera is too much to carry it optimally that way.
A compact would fix all these problems, but then again, muh full frame...
