carving is mostly a winter thing for me, out in the garage, heater on, watching the snow fall, making spoons, comfy

but i already have so many wooden spoons and ive run out of people to give them to, any project ideas?

i tried making a Kuksa once, but i got the proportions on the hande all wrong so ended up taking the handle off and turned it into a salt bowl and gave it to a friend

i heard you need to boil them in salt or something, but if i want to use it for hot drinks, what would be a good treatment?

I am whittling myself a bow from a seasoned stave - quite a bit of effort, but it's actually pleasant and relaxing, as opposed to doing it in the vice etc which resembles just a work a bit too much.

I wanna get into carving and have been making some bullshit outdoors. Is a palm chisel worth the extra price for being a niche thing or will a full size wood carving chisel be easier? Thinking about weight also

These are pretty much the only tools I need to carve anything /out/ related I've ever wanted, I also have a hook knife that I can't find right now

Never used the curved chisel much because its hard to fasten an object to work on while /out/ so it stays home

yea i guess you would need some sort of drill for that, usually if im making a hole its for a lanyard on a spoon or similar, so i just use my knife tip to drill it out

I always wanted to try out wood carving. Maybe I'll pick it up now that I'm stuck at home. Can anyone give me advice on the wood though? What kind should I get and where should I go to look for it? Also curious if different types of wood are good for different things? Like if I wanted to make a spoon to eat with and another to cook with are there different woods that would work best for each?

Those are for use with a lathe. They can be used by hand but thy're not great for it. You'll have better luck with a sharp pairing knife.

That carving axe looks nice.
I picked up a roofing hatchet at a flea market last week and I need a new handle for it but it's going to be my carving and /out/ hatchet for collecting and splitting firewood alongside a fiskers folding saw an 21" bow saw. I'll post in this thread when I get that done tomorrow. It was rusted a bit and the bevel was way off so it's been fun using a file and sand paper to get it back to it's former glory. No markings on the axe head but I estimate it's at least 30 or 40 years old. Other than that I use some cheap knife from a yard sale for most of my carving.

Yeah, boiling in salt to get the tannins out. After that rub with olive or linseed oil and let it penetrate.
