Let's face it, unless you're in the wilderness for months, you don't need to meet your TDEE every day, in fact you could probably do with losing some fat. What you do need is a full stomach at the end of the day to help you fall asleep and lots of carbs to rebuild your glycogen stores.

Take a little pot, boil some water and some basic dry ingredients (pasta? lentils? rice? dried chickpeas?) and eat alongside some vegetables (carrots? onions? beans?) and meat (spam? bully beef? sausage?) and some basic sauce. Dinner with some variety.

Snacks are good with variety. Muesli bars, trail mix, chocolate, salted peanuts, and yes, even peanut butter. But why would you let your own laziness prevent you from bringing good stuff?

In the end, do you want your memory of the hiking trail to be how you downed 12 jars of peanut butter and went to sleep hungry each night?

Hydrogenized oil peanut butter (the stuff you don't have to refrigerant) is awful for you. Natural peanut butter isn't that great for /out/, you're better off just packing peanuts.

The thing is, you can’t bullshit like this. People who actually hike know it’s not a popular option. Like me, they neither bring it nor have seen others bring it. I’m not saying you don’t or it can’t be done, but to use it as a metric to determine that someone else doesn’t hike is pretty dumb.

Really poor compared to what? Fats and carbs satiate on an equal basis per calorie. Most carb sources are much less calorie dense: rice is about 100 cal/Oz, while peanut butter is 160 cal/Oz.

I actually carry other, better foods in those peanut butter jars because they're sturdy, seal well, and fit perfectly in my pack. They're really great for holding several days worth of dried noodles (broken in half) in particular, with just enough room at the top of the jar to place a few sauce mix packets
